This jungle gonna be a bitch to solo trim goddam.
I'm literally exercising my back in preparation for harvest. Gonna be a long one.

Without a doubt.
Gonna take a few days.

But it'll be well worth it.

69 Days From Seed / 23 Days From Flip

I always enjoy this part of the grow when the development of the buds are most prominent and observable from day to day 🤓

I've cleaned up the lower parts of the plants since the last update to allow for easier watering and to focus the energy to the mid/upper parts.

Canopy is sitting at about 30cm thick and light penetration for the most part is hitting every bud sight.

Watering now about every 3 days. These girls can take a total of 50L to get fully fed.

The supercropped girl has also come out very well and I most certainly will add the technique to my arsenal of tricks for future grows. 100% would recommend for eager plants wanting to grow a little taller than needed.

I've also only now popped on the carbon filter. Don't want to get the neighbors too excited just yet 😛 they're just as excited as I am to test out the assortment of strains I will soon have.

Can I call this a dagga lab yet?

Looks really good bud! Well done! 🧨 Even neatened up that bottom canopy superbly!

Further development! Took some general pics and some bud shots of some notable looking delights.

I want to write more but I've really not been doing much special right now. Since cleaning up the lower canopy, work on the grow has been pretty min apart from watering every few days.

I decided to do less trimming in general and keep more larger fan leaves (within reason) on the top half of the canopy as I have usually in the past been quite aggressive with it.

I do feel shorter strains can benefit from more trimming during the grow, especially ones with very short internodal spacing. It worked out really well for me in the past especially when doing topping and mainlining. Although since trying the al natural 'no hard training' (minus the one supercrop of course) method and keeping the bottom half canopy clean I haven't felt I've needed to trim as much leaves as before.

Time for some bud shots! 50 days from flip.

Some look a bit more ripe than others for sure. The Jock Horror and Royal Gorilla in my opinion are the least ripe and the Aurora Indica and Grand Daddy Purple are both the most ripe. Zkittlez x Purple Punch and Criminal + are sitting in the middle.

I can barely find an amber trichome so I think I still have maybe between a week and two weeks to harvest. My harvest ETA has been around the 17th of Jan so they are about right on for where they are now.

Busy looking out for that sign to harvest. I took some more bud shots to survey the trichomes :investigating

The trichomes all for the most part look super milky and a few still looking kinda glassy on the Jock Horror and Royal Gorilla.

Meanwhile I actually have no idea what I'm doing and I'm just waiting for someone to help 😐

With jut like that, best to sell everything and go back to buying bankies from the dudes at the petrol station.:-bankie

You can grow weed and I am sure you can handle most issues which you may run into, so I guess the thing is - what exactly are you trying to achieve or what do you want to try do better or which aspect of your plants / grow do you want to see improvements on etc?

Your plants look good and healthy. Its the first time you are running these strains, if you want to just try and improve overall - perhaps try get a better feel for each strain and adjust what you feed them accordingly... if you want to go into that much effort. I know I personally do not. I'd rather change plants and be able to have each plant receive the same strength of nutes due to time savings, its easier and less effort this way and for me personally would be a better compromise.

Environment control one can only go so far without additional equipment such as an Aircon or dehumidifier and not everyone is willing or is able to justify spending the money to purchase the equipment or pay for the electricity they use as it adds up quickly.

I want a perpetual system between two tents. One tent with mothers and clones/seedlings and the other tent for flower.

I have the mothers and clones/seedlings already going in the smaller tent. I have two mothers, two different strains and I will have another two mothers also two different strains by the end of the next run. So by July I should have 4 mothers of 4 strains that I really like and will grow perpetually for as long as desired and swap out a strain from time to time.

The flower tent I want to be more uniform in terms of canopy height. The plants I took mothers from grew at the same speed and finished at pretty much the same heights, so that will help. I also want to play around with some SCRoG nets and maybe do some topping to get that spread nice and wide.

I discovered that one Criminal + cola got bud rot which I swiftly removed the entirety of. Humidity has been a problem, sitting at 70% for long stretches. I made preventatives early on by adding additional silica to my feeds to help the plants fight off any mold and disease on their own. I suspect the cola was simply too big and held too much moisture (it was the size of a coke can). No other time would I complain about the size of a cola.

I could be that guy that goes and blows cash on a dehumidifier or AC but mama didn't raise no sissy so I shall use alternative methods. Topping will prevent such massive colas from developing and getting a more even canopy will allow my fans to blow across all the flowers more evenly. The strains themselves for the majority appear quite resistant to any problems, also I didn't clone the Criminal +

Apart from that I'll need to figure out a way to hang my drying net because the tent I used to do that in is now occupied by the mothers and clones/seedlings.

Lastly, I am considering some autopots so I can give my self some time away at some point too in the future 😂

But ja awe @PsyCLown lekker tune 🤙

I feel you proved my point in your response. You know what you are doing and you know what you want to do and how to go about doing it.

With growing in general, there are soo many uncertainties and inconsistencies and I more research certainly needs to be done.

It is not yet on the same level as typical commercial farming where the research has been done to the point where people will come out, test your soil and then be able to tell you how much fertiliser to give, when to give it, when to do this and when to do that to maximize yield.

There are products which are designed to increase plant health, growth and yield but if given to your crop say in weeks 3 and 4 then it actually has the opposite effect although before and after is fine and increases yield.

Cannabis I do not feel is at that level yet, some are still debating whether to flush or not. lol

Different strains and phenos can have different requirements. Lots of talk about products which can assist with increasing yield, frost, terpenes etc. but how much research has been done as to how well these products work and the best way to make use of them?

Research as to how safe certain substances are to use on cannabis as we smoke it and do not eat it like a lot of other crops.

So I feel there is still a lot of unknowns with cannabis in general. You have not done any big "no no's" with your grow, so I guess it comes down to trial and error, testing, research and dialing everything in.

If I have a suggestion or thought, I generally mention it. I think that is the best one can do at the moment. After dialing in the basics and such, I think one ends up in the unknown territory with a lot of speculation, personal preference and trying to find various ways and things to help improve ones grow.

Maybe I am wrong though.

I have harvested one of the Criminal + and the Grand Daddy Purple.

Looking at them again tonight I decided they were ready. I found a temporary place to hang my drying net, only two levels though. I'll need to wait until I am ready to harvest the other plants before I will be able to use the inside of the tent for the entirety of the drying net. I might actually need another drying net 😶

The Grand Daddy Purple really came back for a vengeance. A terrible first two runs but wowi did this plant come out quite nicely this time. I am glad I gave it one more chance.

The harvest has been concluded.

Apart from the one Criminal + cola that got some mold, another cola from one Jock Horror also started to get some mold, so I decided to start chopping the whole grow. Some plants could have gone another one or two weeks, in particular the Jock Horror and Royal Gorilla, but this is in my opinion specific to just these strains as they do have quite long flowering times as opposed to the others as they are supposedly more sativa dominant.

While trimming I did not find any more mold which was a relief.

Took me roughly three days to get it all done, it felt like a time warp trimming tree after tree. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I've taken the veg plants from the small veg tent and now placed them in the flower tent, and placed the drying net with the harvest into the small tent to continue drying. I find the smaller tent with the drying net creates the ideal drying environment. The drying process in this stage has in the past lasted up to 10 days which I feel is a nice slow dry.

So let's just go ahead and start up the next one 8-)

The numbers are in.

I have weighed all the dried bud after a few days in the jars and I have the following numbers to show:

  • Zkittlez x Purple Punch - Ripper Seeds x1 - 59g
  • Criminal+ - Ripper Seeds x3 - 159g
  • Royal Gorilla - Royal Queen Seeds x1 - 66g
  • Aurora Indica - Nirvana Seeds x4 - 324g
  • Jock Horror - Nirvana Seeds x2 - 175g
  • Grand Daddy Purple - Green Smoke Room Seeds x1 - 86g

Grand total: 869g

My total electricity and setup expense (soil, nutrients etc) for the 4 months of growing is a total of R7931. That makes my cost per gram roughly R9.13 per gram 🤪 This includes my separate veg tent with it's own fans and 120W LED.

Gram per meter is roughly 301g/m²

I ran the 3 x LEDs each at a maximum of 180W by the end of flowering which is a total of 540W. Gram per wattage is therefore roughly 1.6g/W 😵

The tupperware box below is 100g of popcorn buds and some dry trim that I have not added to the above total. We used that to make super strong oil 🥺

After a good cure I will post some bud pics and a smoke report 8-)

Here is a little smoke report on the strains I had harvested in this grow. I will go through them in order of personal preference;

Criminal +

Most certainly the best all-rounder. Dense buds, not too much outer trichomes but the potency was great. Day or night, it could be smoked and enjoyed, but not too much as it would render any tasks for the day as non-existent. Smoke was peppery and the taste was spicy. Not a lot of terpenes in particular, quite a sneaky bud actually.

Aurora Indica

The weakest of the strains, but this is not to say that it is not potent 😆 very fruity aroma and very smooth smoke. This strain is a delight to smoke, light smoke and easy to crush in the grinder. This strain is also the most popular amongst the friend group.

Zkittlez x Purple Punch

This strain is bag appeal! Most frosty and most fruity of all the strains. The smoke is a tad harsh but after a cure it really balanced out, so make sure to focus on the dry/cure for this one.

Grand Daddy Purple

Super gassy bud, when the jar opens you know what time it is. Diesel mixed with raspberries are what to be smelt after grinding some of this bud. Average smoke and high potency, this bud is smoked on occasion and has been made into medicinal tincture.

Royal Gorilla

Airy buds, very odd smell to it too. Used all of this bud for practicing making tinctures/oils.

Jock Horror

This strain turned out to hermie so most of the buds had seeds in them 🙃 a turn of events indeed for this one as the buds were looking pretty super. I had zero idea that they were growing seeds. Have mostly just given away this bud for people to do their own experiments on for butters and tinctures.

      Hello growers
I would love to have an opinion on this topic. Let me update you on what I have been working with. I have a one plant indoor grow inside a 80cm x 80cm grow tent. I use a 40l fabric pot with both Orgasoilux and Freedom farms soil (green bag). The bottom half I use Orgasoilux(20l) and the top half I use Freedom farms soil(20l). Throughout veg all I give the plant is Biodyne Environoc 401 (microbes), Molasses and water. This results in an extremely healthy plant.
Once I flip to flower I start using organic bottled nutrients. In the past I have used Biobizz Bio-bloom, and more recently I have used Dirty hands inc - Bio-Phos (Jamie's brand). I give 3ml Bio-Phos once a week early flower and up it to 5ml every week mid to late flower. Plus a molasses feeding every 2 weeks and stopped using Biodyne microbes 1 week into flower.
I was thinking about completely ditching bottled nutrients and going the topdressing route for flower. I was thinking of maybe topdressing a week before the flip with Jamie's elemental blend. I am just worried if it will provide enough for the plants through to harvest. I was also thinking of maybe using my own topdressing blend of Dry kelp, Gypsum, Malted Barley and Worm Castings. Would love an opinion on switching to topdressing for flower and if the elemental blend should be more than enough to take me to harvest. If you think I should just stick to bottled nutrients for flower let me know. I am going to include photo's of my 2 previous grows using the method I have stated above. Just trying to get the best quality flower possible :)
      Some thoughts of mine...…
      Topdressing vs Liquid Nutrients?
Biobizz Bio-Bloom vs Dirty Hands Inc Bio-Phos?
One topdressing enough 1 week before flip?
Elemental Blend or my own flowering mix?
      ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      My Grow:
Medium: Top Half Freedom Farms soil (20l) + bottom half Orgasoilux(20l)
Additives and Amendments: Molasses + Biodyne Environoc 401 Microbes + Dirty Hands Inc - Bio-Phos + Mycoroot (seedling)
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      (Seedling)
      - Solo Cup + Freedom Farms soil + Mycoroot
-Transplant in week 2 of veg to 40l
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      (Veg Stage)
      - initial inoculant 2ml Environoc Microbes
-1ml per litre  Environoc every 2 weeks
-5ml per litre Molasses every 2 weeks
-Stop Environoc 1 week into flower
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      (Flower Stage)
-3ml Bio-Phos every week (early flower)
-5ml Bio-Phos every week (late flower)

-Stop Bio-Phos 2 weeks before harvest
      -Feed molasses until harvest

First time growing photoperiods, quite excited.

      Genetics
Hiroshima by Renegade Seed Co.  6 Pack

High THC, and according to the product description should deliver "high yields of dense, rock-solid buds."  Hoping to achieve that.
Want to make one a mother and start learning to clone. The description says "These highly stable genetics produce two phenotypes at most." Should be easy to choose a winner to reveg.
They advise topping, which I am also looking forward to learning. Want to also try "FIM" a plant or two to experiment.
      Grow Setup
      Same as before. Here
      ~
      Lets go
      9 November
Seeds arrived. Also received a Promotional 2 Pack of G-Fawke.

      10 November
Seeds into a glass of spring water. Onto a heating mat and into a dark cupboard to soak for 18 hours.

      11 November
Seeds started showing roots. All 6 seeds popped, gently took them and placed them root facing down in Jiffy Preforma Plugs.
Covered the holes slightly and into the ROOTiT Small Propagator they go. Heating mat underneath, and gently misted with spring water. Also threaded the hygrometer reader through a ventilation hole, to see the environment reading.
I think this reading is fine for germination. Any and all feedback welcome.

Hoping for them all to push out effectively over the coming days. In hindsight I should have maybe done the paper towel method to get the roots longer, before putting them into the plugs. I've also previously had a failed germination where I watered a bit much, so just gently misting this time as to not drown/stunt the seeds.

      50 pack 2 wire wagos 221 $25

4x plastic junction boxes 4inch x 4inch x 3inch (make sure it comes with something to plug up the holes and hold the wire)$40

500 assorted pack heatshrink tubing $20 (good to help fit in junction box)

      4x Leviton 515PV 15Amp 125Volt grounding plug $20

25’ 16guage wire (for the grounding plug) $20

TC:$165-Everything is super flexible here just make sure your amps and volt calculations are solid.
-Dedicated extra fans (required): With 2 medium fans running on the light, and another 2 small fans running on the drivers everything is 20C-25C.

      SETTING UP THE DIMMERS

(Very easy if you do it like i did in these pictures)

      All you need is:
•100k potentiometers (maybe an ohm meter if you want to make sure ur dimmers go all the way to 100, most dont they go to like 92 or 97)

•20 guage wire (same as the led strips)

•Plastic junction box (make sure its got rubber wire holders that you cut a hole through with scissors and put the wire/ potentiometer through)

      •211 Wago wire connector

•soldering machine (temperature is dependant on what kind of solder you use) $25

      • silver solder (find a lower temp soldering machine ~360f for silver) $20
(This light is truly 800w if you use the exact parts, if you use more or less drivers and led strips or different brands then the wattage can vary from 600-1000, materials are very flexible just try to make sure volt/amp calculations are correct) (Always be cautious with electricity, build this whole thing without being plugged in to any wall outlet/power source⚠️⚡️)
