2 Questions

 

1. Are you gonna defoliate???

 

2. About your light spread. I edited your photo to ask and I also hijacked another topic with this question but seeing that I got a photo to help I'll ask it again.

 

 

Your main light spread is the orange part that I circled and that's the sweet spot for the buds being produced, but the areas marked in pink is NOT in the direct / sweet spot of the light spread. How does that influence the bud production in terms of density/ bud to leaf ratio, etc ???

 

I want to use my tent to its full potential.

So I've been wondering whether to do some defoliation or not, I don't wanna stunt the bud production but at the same time it's certainly affecting the light penetration. I have tried to physically move branches around and tuck leaves to assist with light penetration.

 

As for the light spread, I run my lights very low to the canopy and I have them staggered. A lot lower than other grows I've seen, I have the luxury of having quite a few quantum boards in that small space.

How much it affects the bud not having direct light under there I am not sure - buds are still growing and resin production still seems to be happening pretty well.

 

Realistically, I don't think majority of people have direct light under every plant. I don't feel it's a problem, it's a small area and already I feel as if 380W in the area is overkill. I can increase it to 480w, actually 504w max, but feel its really not needed. Next flower grow I may turn the power down and see how it compares.

 

Edit: I feel a scrog net would have increased light penetration and increased the efficiency in terms of using my tent space for flowering.

Next time I flower I'd like to scrog if I can.

There's a lot of debate when it comes to defoliation, but I think it comes down to a few things. I personally defoliate like mad. Did a defoliation before plants went into flower. Did another one 2 weeks in. If i think about it then it comes down to this.....

PLANT TRAINING

If you train your plants (like scrog) then your pulling down and using all that growth. The growth on the underside of the screen needs to be cut off anyway, a type of defoliation, not true.....

2. QUANTITY VS QUALITY

This is where is start to defoliate. If you clear all the leafs covering potential bud sites then cut that fucker off. I've seen great results with my Red Cherry Berry and Monster Gorilla. Will update my thread tonight. The quality bud bud from all the sites is great.


3. GROW EXPERIENCE

I started small and went heavier over time to se what the plants do or not do. I've never had any ill effect in terms of bud production being a issue. I'm doing another defoliation in week 5 and then I'm done. I try to do atleast 3 defoliations in the flowering cycle.

What size tent do you have??? I'm getting a new one soon but before that I'm getting a new light for my veg cab the current lights is super ghetto. It works good but it's time for an upgrade

 Main reason for my question. Saw how super easy it is to build a scrog screen and even a floating double scrog screen.

So I did a defoliation when I flipped to flower than akother around 2 weeks in and haven't touched it since.

I may try remove some fan leaves to give a bit more light penetration though. Been toying with the idea, should I or shouldn't I.

It's 1.2 x 0.6 and I think 1.7 tall. Not a big tent at all.

If the bud site is blocked by a leaf then remove it. Many grow gurus advise against but trial and error......not true ???

Jip. All subject to what the setup is, but it's about best using the light that's available, and how far it penetrates.

Yeah but like I said previously, just test one side branch or remove one or 2 leafs to see how they react. If the reaction is positive take off more next time.

 

When your indoors your control the sun. The parts that do not receive light will be energy wasters and thus removing them. Focus on the parts that gets more light.

I watched the video as well, although I think I will be doing a defoliation when I get a chance - removing just the fan leaves and leaving the sugar leaves. If the fan leaf is really not in the way of bud sites, I will leave it.

However if it may prevent airflow or stop light from penetrating better it will be removed - so probably just keep fan leave son the outside of the branches and plant.

 

On another note, I got a cheap USB microscope a while ago to help me check my trichomes and did a quick check on the bagseed plant and its starting to turn cloudy. Really liking the microscope so far.

Day 90 / Day 38 of Flower 

 

I did some defoliation, I removed some of the larger fan leaves (most of them), to allow more light to get to the buds. I feel I may have stunted the bud growth by not doing this sooner so I have learnt my lesson for next time.

Looking much better with fewer leaves and I feel the airflow in my tent is now greatly improved, as well as light penetration.

yes, that video is for outdoor grow, however what i took from it was that you shouldn't remove the SUGAR leaves, they feed the bud, however fan leaves i still remove if they blocking light to bud sites.

Agreed, when inside light generally come from one direction, whereas outside the sun moves throughout the day giving light from almost all angles.

However i still take fan leaves down if they block direct sunlight.

I defoliated my Indoor plants last week, 2nd week of budding, they shot up at a alarming rate. -+15cm over 2 days.

So this is the 3rd defoliation I have done since flipping to flower.

 

I lolipopped / schwarzed the plant twice - one when flipping to flower and again a week or so later and now removed the fan leaves.

I should have removed the leaves sooner though, left all sugar leaves! Although even some fan leaves had some heavy trichomes going on at the base and stem.
