Looking nice! I noticed with my outdoor @Totemic Choc x Gelato's that the bud structure also look exactly like yours. Foxtaily structure and not big dense nugs like my Chronic or Bubbleberry. Is this due to the genetic make-up or environmental factors?

It's the nature of the F2 line, it's genetics, and the foxtailing is dominant from the chocolope NL. The gelato cut is also not a big yielder but produces these smaller indica nugs. They fair well and express with uniform genetic foxtailing to build quite a bigger bud than winter would produce

  2. Day 28

    Only 3 phenos remain.

    #1

Been the standout plant since early veg. Her terpene profile is that exact sweet ice-cream on the nose. Her frost development is on point, and she has a large bract size. I'm loving the main cola she is developing too.

    #6

This is what I would call an average expression of this generation. Nothing too special about her compared to #1. Her terpene profile is also sweet, still developing but not quite that pronounced ice-cream I'm after. Her cola development is distinctly different to #1

    #2

This is the gelato dominant pheno. Compact nodes, battling with shade avoidance and not opening up quite as much as I'd like, but the terpene profile is on point, and she has frost and yield development potential.

Overall my main interest is my #1 pheno for this round. The F1 generation gives you the dominant traits of the 2 lines expressed. #1 fits this perfectly, but in the f2s recessive traits from both lines are going to express. This means that while #1 is an absolute stunner of a plant, it may not be the plant here that produces the best set of activated recessive traits in the next generation.

Sorry bud but I have a difference of opinion...

Once gave an autoflower (the last auto I ever grew) a new pot the same day as I flipped and she grew ENORMOUS compared to the rest that stayed in small pot.

The plant is still effectively in veg mode for 10-14 days after the flip, and just like stretch above ground, the roots also go through an explosive growth phase as the plant prepares itself for peak flowering, so a repot on the same day as flip would be benificial

Can you elaborate on what you mean by saying "It starts becoming less successful when you start trying to use our land races". I have been growing for 2 years now and I want to start playing around with breeding.

Our local landrace populations are hermie riddled, tall sativas, and not worth breeding with indoors. They don't suit my taste and preferences

I grow in a 1.2m tent and my limit is 600g of dried trimmed buds can't see how I will get more than 600g ever.

Yeah man, I consider my space dialed in, and I still average just over 500g in 1.2x1.2

To the OP, Double your space to 1.2x2.4....

Half your wattage by dropping the HID, and run 720w of Led in the double space.

Then you are going to hit your 800g+ mark.

This is so exceptionally exciting and interesting to follow.

It's really nice to see the train of thought of the breeder and I am learning so much.

I am proud to be running your genetics and the folks I have given cuttings to are also very VERY happy.

Well done man and thanx for sharing :-respect

Yeah just like growing, there are many ways to approach it with no right or wrong really.

Some breeders collect and work with lots of pollen at the same time. It's real easy in my mind to loose track of particles that can't be seen singularly.

So to avoid cross contamination I only work with one type of pollen in a 2 to 3 month period, or 4 to 6 males a year.

  7. Day 21

The view of the remaining 6 yesterday afternoon.

    IMG_20210622_131314.thumb.jpg.f2afc1ea9fe94e91b472ecc37d1319e5.jpg

Had them out of the tent for a good inspection. 2 more have been cut. No13, the outlier from the start is just a weak plant, while no11, is showing its hermie nature quite oddly, pushing growths along a fan leaf stem, but nevertheless has been cut.

    IMG_20210623_085138.thumb.jpg.75c30d159b32e4b89fb702c49ca04567.jpg

Wherever there is abnormal growth in that nodal area its a clear indication of the hermi trait. Even though those arrowed growths are showing only pistilate and not a single ball sack yet.

So that leaves me with No1, 2, 5, and 6. Their side views. All virtually the same height at 70cm.

And of course let's not forget the male. He is now reached his peak at 6 weeks of flower. I have been monitoring his development, deciding if I want his pollen. He produces copious amounts of pollen, pushing a fair amount of resin glands... Overall a lekker male. Something that many aren't doing. Don't grab the first pollen that your male gives. Grow him all the way out and check him out.

As always I don't collect and use pollen, but always a live male, so he is joining the remaining 4 in the tent for only 2 days before going to reveg. That's more than enough time to ensure a full pollination.

  8. What an interesting few months it has been. The culmination of 1 year of pushing totemic as an official brand in SA, I have distributed a little over 45 000 seeds, 15 000 regulars and 30 000 feminized seeds. I feel it is important for me to share this with other local breeders not at all to flex as some are assuming, but to illustrate how big the local industry is, how big the need is, and how much of our economy is still flowing out to the international market. I feel I'm drowning and can't keep up with the market!

I'm not here to compete with other local breeders. Breed your fire. Let's grow this industry together.

  9. She is nearing the end and may only want water.

That curl in the leaf could be overwatering and nute burn that's progressing.

What you'll find with the green Gelato is that it does not fade to purples and reds. She goes light green then yellow.

  10. 😱 Man, you just don't realize....

You are one of the OG growers I have looked up to while I have been learning through the years...

Thank you. Your feedback means the world to me, and I hope what I'm working on continues to improve the local industry as a whole

All 6 are still around. They've been moved to a new space where they will finish up. Cleaned up a lot of the lower growth.

It seems I have a purple pheno among them.

Also added some predatory insects I was gifted by @GreenGrow Garden Route I don't have any mite issues but prevention is better than a cure I guess.

Are all the females shorter squat plants?

For veg they have been pretty consistent with a shorter expression, but remember that I have forced the tight nodal spacing with light.

As they progress through stretch the different or similar heights will be clear.

Males, even from a similar pheno group tend to exadurate their main cola to get that pollen as high up as possible

As a breeder you probably know the scene quite well. Are GGG really all that and a bag of chips?

Do they hold super rare cuts or do they just create new shit that is fire? Can you compare them to InHouse Genetics?

I see 7 regulars goes for about R2300 on B&B and that is quite a stiff price..

With so many strains readily available around the world, rare really isn't rare anymore...

    thanks man!

well surely it helps a bunch when you already got a handle on breeding with plants!

I assume you already had the space when working with peppers and this is key to doing a project like this and is what is keeping a lot of people from doing it.

pretty cool you found a line to work with and invest in!

with the poly hybrids you expect a bigger gene pool and a "new" set of different phenos and new traits to work with? or do I have this wrong? you still after a certain trait?

Space has always been an issue. Less so now than a few years ago, but I've always tried to compensate for this by making arrangements with local growers around me, and I have patches of 50 here and patches of 100 there

With the polyhybrids I have expanded the gene pool I can work with tremendously. There will be countless new pheno expressions as I take each line to F2 and on

I'm not focused on any single trait, rather looking for anything that is a positive step forward.
