Just finished repotting the special queen 1 and the badazz og cheese. The cheese is a bit small but thats ok.
I first wet the soil with the amendments included and then continued with the repotting. Luckily no major hick ups so Im happy.
My water tanks are collecting rain water but the water inside smells weird, would this cause issues with the plants as I want to water this entire grow with rain water.- 1

Aweh@SAgrower
Depends on what you planting.
Photoperiods.
The potting up strategy is to promote a strong rootball early on as@Prom mentioned. But also serves to assist growers not to over water their seedlings. (think big pot, must add plenty water, seedling struggles and possibly dies.)
Autoflowers
Usually are planted into their final pots to avoid repotting stress, which has an impact on veg time and overall final size/yield.
If you manhandle any plant during repotting, you can lose 2weeks veg time.
I currently use a 2x pot system in soil.
Germ in paper towel or straight to tray, transplant to 10cm seedling pot/tray, on 1st 2 real leaves they go to final pots 20-30lit.
I grow outdoor on the east coast- plenty bugs and have lost too many seedlings to vegetarian critters, prefer to plant them out when they a little bigger.
Cheers

Thanks. Yes I should have mentioned the seeds are all photoperiod seeds. I will follow the advice and repot the special queen in a couple of hours. -
Rule of thumb is that the roots follow the leaves. When your leaves reach the side of the pot, is time for a new home.
Thank you for the tip. Would you suggest planting straight into the 20L pots?I also do the 350ml foam cup method, as seedling gets bigger it drinks more and it might dry out abit quicker. That living soil holds water nice also. I punch alot of small holes at bottom side of cup and underneath to hopefully promote a little root pruning and get my root ball going earli on, you can go 2+weeks in the cup. Did you get the amendments also for the soil?

I have indeed received the amendments, they have been bubbling in rain water overnight. I bought an airpump and airstone for this. -
So I finished my first ever grow, things went a bit tits up at then but hey that's how you learn.
I have started my second grow which will be used to learn some new training techniques. This grow will be as organic as possible and will be done outside in sunlight when possible otherwise under a 150w LED which they are currently being vegged under.
I know its winter now etc but I dont plan to veg them very long, as I said its mostly a test run to see how much my own knowledge has grown and also what I can learn from others.
The seeds that is currently in the grow is;
Badazz OG cheese
Special queen 1
Blue dream
Malawi gold (still germinating)
The grow medium that I will be using is a living soil I got from@SkunkPharm . I must say he has been more than helpful in more ways than one. I know I ask a lot of questions but thanks for everything.
I will be planting them in 20L freedom farm pots.
I don't know much about living soil yet but it seems that as soon as the current roots went through the jiffy pellets into the soil they grew quicker.
The sun has not really been that great the last couple of days so they have only been under the LED so they are a bit small for their age, I think.
The og cheese and special queen 1 sprouted on 10 May, the blue dream on 25 May.
My first question I have is when should I repot them into the bigger, final pots?
The pictures below were taken today.
Please dont ask about the ice cream cone, that is the project of the wife (blue dream)
As always, any other advice or criticism welcome.

Which area of CPT are you in?Actually for my girlfriend who smokes. She has tobacco but no paper. Smoking cigarettes really helps her stay calm with her BPD.

Vegtech across from Joostenberg also sells them. I bought a roll from them last year. I paid R15.44 per square but not sure what the prices are of ghtech.Seeds for Africa sells it. But I am sure if you contact ghtech in somerset west you could get it for half the price.

Dont know how the wind is by you guys but I tried making one with pvc but the wind won in like week 2 of November winds here towards Brackenfell.Where did you get the greenhouse plastic? I'm gonna have to put together a pvc frame and cover it soon. The dew did get hectic quite suddenly. -
Awesome! I bought some seeds from you today but sadly you were out of DP. I will try again later in the year. Have to get me some DP this year! I am yearning to smoke a nice DP, shit!@SAgrower Honestly! The best DP smoke I've ever had! Once I wake and bake with DP, after that i can smoke hybrids, it just wont take that sativa high away! -
Like 80L. Will probably only do 2 plants for now and 2 later. And yes I would definitely like to use some of your soil if possible.
Thanks for the very kind gesture

Anyone know where I can find some decent soil in the Northern suburbs of Cape? I dont have anything against Freedom farms etc but I want to use the winter months growing some plants to experiment with regarding stress techniques, organic growing etc.
I know a member once mentioned a soil that they bought close to the garden centre in Joostenberg but I cant find that post now.

Do share what you used please@Mambawana I found two biofungisides mixed them and they are basically eating the pm up. It's amazing think I made my own serenade @Prom -
Thanks will do. Something that just occurred to me. Last week I bought some potting soil from builders to just ensure all of the roots are covered because some of the small fine roots were on top of the soil.Good luck dude, keep us posted
There are 2 pots which did not receive that soil, the others are all looking the same as the pictures I posted.
Could this just be a coincidence?- 1

I will do some serious inspection today thanks for all of the help, hopefully this grow doesn't go to shit.Any time @SAgrower
I forgot to mention you should take a look around the buds, even inside them, the little caterpillars like to burrow their way into the buds, those buds will develop even further issues.- 1
-
Thanks for the info, appreciate it.Hi @SAgrower , you got some insect and bug problems there, the little holes in the leaves most likely a kind of Caterpillar, some of it looks like leafminers, but the biggest issue is what looks to me like rust/blackmold.
The plants are far into flowering to suggest any treatments, except, defoliate as much of the infected/damaged leaves, keep a close eye and chop when she's done, plants in serious stress will usually finish up faster.- 1
-
No improvement yet but not getting worse also.

Does this look normal? All of my plants are suffering for some reason and I cant figure it out. I had to chop a plant yesterday because it appeared to just be dying.
They are actually getting worse by the day.- 1

Those brown dry buds look suspiciously like bud rot or dry rot. The fungus is pretty nasty and can spread, I would suggest removing all that are affected carefully, so you don't spread the spores.
If it is fungus, those buds are useless anyway.
If you cut branches it might be a good idea to seal them with a commercial sealer or a honey and powder cinnamon mix to prevent infection.
I would suggest you topdress that pot with a 5-10cm layer of medium/compost.
Roots dont like being exposed to light/air.
Could always place the brick on top of the compost if you need extra weight.

Thanks for the inputs, I shall be doing so today.I used some ground coffee mixed with maize meal for the ants last season. Worked well. -
Evening@SAgrower
Pics of the whole plant are good, but pls also add close up pics of the problem areas.
Here is what I can see.
1. That plants looks like you are spraying something- milk for pm? (White spots)
2. Are the bricks for stability? What size is that bag? Maybe she is rootbound.
3. Is the brick on the right cutting into the stem at all?
4. Some of those brown buds look like bud rot but need a close up pic.
Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
1. Milk solution was sprayed for WPM
2. Bricks are there to help that the pots dont blow over. 20L bag.
3. The brick is on a root, picture attached.
4. Close up pic attached. I have removed about 10 similar looking branches yesterday.
Thanks for the help, you guys have no idea how much it is helping. This being my first grow it feels like some sort of an attachment to the trees and I actually worry when shit things like this happens.
-
Seems like I only ask for advice here. This plant (Hulk berry) is dying on the one side. Its one of the main branches.
Any idea why? Cant find anything wrong on the tree. -
Thank you, this is really helping during my first grow.Ants you can kill on contact with soapy water, it dissolves the wax coating on their eksoskeleton and they die.
You can also use borax and icing sugar, 50/50 mix with bit of water(mix to thick paste) as a bait around nests, ants like sugar and carry it into the nest and they die.(not safe with pets and kids)
Otherwise there are many commercial products available, some more nasty than others.

Thats plant scale. There are a few species, they may live in symbiotic relationship with ants.
Do a google search, they are not good for your plants and can do enough damage to eventually kill them.
You can manually remove them or spray them with an oil/soap solution.
Ants around plants like in your pics are usually bad news.

Thanks guys, appreciate the response. I sprayed the plants yesterday late afternoon with a tobacco, sunlight liquid and gloves mix. I removed most of them by hand but how can I get rid of the ants in the pots and plants currently?Ants herd and farm aphids.. they drink the sweet juice the aphids give, when stimulated. So they also protect them against enemies.. get rid of the ants and the rest on your plants ASAP -
And awesome prizes wow! Congratulations guys, very nice pictures.Well done guys, some great entries!
Keep it up!

Thank you very much I will do some investigation into this. I only use the water for the pool top up currently so there is no movement of water inside except when it rains.
