  1. I am pretty sure we did a poll like this a while back, however things change and new products come onto the market.

Wondering what nutes everyone is using, I am considering changing over to try one or two others to see how they are.

Whether I stick with them is another question though.

  2. @greenkush Mentioned these to me a while back, however I believe you need to use the pressure compensator / regulator drippers and then connect that to the Netbow. When I tried the pressure compensating drippers previously I could not get enough pressure from my water pump for it to work, so you'd need a larger than average water pump I rate.

Also you'd need to have it on a timer. Otherwise it looks great and possibly a cheaper option for bigger grows compared to watering systems like Blumats and Autopots - which I feel are perhaps more feasible for smaller grows.

  3. I am hesitant, I mounted the TV in my room but made a bit of a mess. Not sure if I'm just not good at drilling or if my drill is Would prefer to have someone do it for the lounge.

    Fair enough.

As long as your drill has the impact drill (hammer icon) mode and you're using the correct bit for masonry wall, it's easy to get the holes done.

If you used normal drill mode... Might have been a bit more of a challenge to get the holes done.

Will bud that is entered/accepted be tested for contaminants ?

What you treating your plants with...

    surprised steve urkel GIF

I stand to be corrected, however companies which are able to test cannabis for contaminants in SA does not fully exist yet. I was actually looking for some, there was one I stumbled upon but they're still awaiting approval and to receive the samples to calibrate their equipment with.

Also not the cheapest and it just compares it against a list of contaminants, so if the contaminant is not on that list then it won't be detected.

  5. Hmm, it is not difficult to mount a TV bracket but can be a mission without the proper tools.

I have a swivel type of TV bracket and it is awesome - it allows you to adjust the angle as well so even if you do not mount the TV mount 100% straight you can adjust it so that the TV is straight and you can pull the TV out and push it in and turn it and tilt it etc. etc.

Not something I use all that often, but helps bring the TV a bit closer when you have a small TV 😞  lol

If you have such a mount, perhaps you can consider doing it yourself?

In hindsight I feel a bit stupid for saying yes to that question. But they got me when they said they will be conducting medical tests before starting with the questions.

Nah, I understand - you don't want to be caught lying.

If you say yes, then it is something you won't have to worry about if they ever do test for it.

Let us know how it goes, for interest sake 🙂

Hi, I am currently in process of applying for life insurance. The question of taking cannabis in the last 10 years came up and I answered yes.

Does anyone know what the implications of this are and any advice around further questioning?

Honestly not sure, however I suspect higher premiums for "drug use".

In their eyes, it is not seen as medicinal. Quite sure on this, unfortunately.

I was advised by my broker to say no to any "drugs".... State that I do not smoke.

Yes you give fair points, how many different types of bud and quantity thereof can one judge actually smoke? and the reliability of the judging in that manner is something to also ponder.

Look like @THCSA Says, if he had to consider everyone ones opinion, nothing would ever really get done, so for what its worth, I think it can be achieved and i'm sure a successful day will be had.

Yeah, I think it will be awesome for those who attend and I feel it is great that we are getting such events in South Africa.

The more events like this the better for us I feel, brings more exposure and with time the backing will increase and the events have the opportunities to grow and improve. If 10 entrants and 100 judges do not work, learn from it and move on and improve it on the next even. Simple as that.

I do not feel it will detract from the fun for those attending or entering into the cannabis cup.

10 growers is a tiny percentage of growers in Capetown. That's the point I'm making.

    100%

However not everyone will be interested in entering this.

Also they will be sifting through the entries and narrowing it down to some of the better 10 entries they get. You likely won't seem oom Piet's outdoor landrace from 2019 in that list of 10 because he still has some laying around and thinks its great because it hits harder than the majut from BP. It will likely be replaced by some better entries.

We need to start somewhere, how many entries would you like for judges to sample? How much bud can a person sample in a few hours?

Not sure how big this event will be, however I do not imagine it to attract 10s of thousands of people either.

I think it is pretty cool to have such an event, if it runs well then the next one could look at taking it a step further, improving on the short falls and hopefully get more backing and a bigger turn out.

Perhaps it could be built up to an event for people throughout SA to enter some of their best shizz  - South African cannabis cup and see who can walk away with the title.

How long have these cannabis cups been going on for in SA? I see there was a Cape Town one in 2021, not sure about the previous years.

Can anyone share some light on "lasers" in growing?

    Screenshot_20220210-215913_Samsung Internet.jpg

    Lol, I have no clue.

However 660nm and 730nm (or UV as quite a few manufacturers refer to it as) are quite common with grow lights now a days.

@Righteoussower A light from 2011, you need to keep in mind that the efficiency and output of the light will decrease over time. It is generally recommended to replace your grow light in 3 to 5 years due to this decrease.

I guess you can think of it like clothing, you have a favorite pair of socks or top which you wear often... Over time it starts to wear down, gets damaged and you end up needing to replace it due to holes. Similar concept with grow lights, while the light may still appear to be bright, the actual PAR output will reduce quite a bit and therefore the efficiency goes down and you end up using the same amount of electricity for less output and your plants will start to notice it as well and growth won't be the same as when the light was new.

I have never seen that light before, but it is basically just COB's which are not very popular anymore and you get far more efficient LED's and therefore grow lights now a days.

In terms of a new or replacement light - you can go the route of building your own if you enjoy that sort of thing or have the knowledge to do it. Not difficult, but not for everyone.

Otherwise you can just buy a good grow light - we have vendors on this forum who offer grow lights and the members can help guide you - most make use of Quantum Boards or bar lights. Both have pros and cons, but end of the day they're very very similar - especially if they both use the common Samsung LM301 LED diode.

I prefer Quantum Boards, however there is no right or wrong between Quantum Boards (QB's) or bar lights, it comes down to what may be better for you and your setup.... With that being said you do get some shitty Quantum Boards and you do get some shitty bar lights.

If you are unsure, ask on the forum and the members can help guide you 🙂

  11. The members we have on the forum, especially the active ones, are a tiny percentage of growers here in SA.

Unfortunately the forum is not a place where most growers with bigger operations hang out. Also a lot of them like to keep quiet and lurk instead.

Not saying we do not have any or that they aren't active on the forum, but there are growers who have been doing this for years in a larger scale and continue to do so. They've generally learn what they need to and will run their own independent tests when needed and seldom need to reach out for help or already have the contacts in place and do not require a forum to do it.

I feel there are far more newer growers on the forum and majority are home growers. Some might be larger home grows, however a homegrower none the less.

Although we're getting off topic now. I hope such an even pops up in JHB sometime, will be pretty cool!

A bit more time to prepare and get plants ready and growing will help though.

    Yip, 500g for 100 judges.

This is cup where the judges get to toke not just look and smell.
Entrants are welcome to take back any leftovers.

Would rather have a little too much bud than way too little. It also leaves a little room for that fattest buds to be displayed.

Doubt that everyone will get through their 5 grams (10x0.5), although some certainly will.

What do you think is a fair number?

Considering there are 100 judges, I do not feel it is a crazy amount. As you said 5g of bud per judge in total for the day.

Yielding 50g from a plant is not unreasonable. Obviously will vary depending on the way the plant was grown and training done etc.

However one can easily yield 50g from a plant, perhaps even more... I assume the 50g could even come from 2 plants, which are the same strains (ideally same pheno)?

100x judges also makes it a bit more fair, helps rule out bias from a small group of judges who may just happen to have a preference towards certain terps for example.
