  1. Day 28

Grow is going well, I am making mistakes but learning from them and then just learning in general.

I finally got some foldback clips so could start more LST. I have had some issues with my feeding / watering, I did not realize how low the PH was and that caused some of my plants to be a bit unhappy. EM Pro Soil lowers PH very quickly! This has been corrected and I will be PH correcting all feedings going forward, will be aiming for a PH of 6.0

I also noticed some pre-flowering sex pistils showing on my bagseed plant. It confused me at first. haha

I trans-potted GSC #2 as she has been unhappy as she drinks too quickly and was seems to have outgrown the pot she was in, I made some instant-transplant pots and so far it seems to have worked very nicely. I guess only time will tell for sure. The 20L fabric pot is quite large, I have some of the Grow Guru ones but am expecting delivery of some Plant Matter fabric pots tomorrow and then want to try get some Bidim and make some square fabric pots to help save space. as the square pots are shaped better and with limited space make quite a difference, annoying nobody stocks square fabric pots locally.

I am expecting the 480W LED driver to be ready for collection tomorrow, may only be able to collect on Thursday though - currently I am limited to 180W of power and with the more powerful LED driver I will be able to do the full 480W which the QB's are capable of.

My tent is setup and ready, I will move the smaller LED driver and 2x QB288's into the tent for now and then later on may swap it around and use the tent for flowering and the room for veg / clones. I had to pop my 3rd Dauqiari Lime auto seed as the one did not germinate, the auto's are doing well although I may remove them from this thread and start a new thread relating to them as I have different plants for them...

  2. I am curious to find out the same, I assume you would need solar panels and quite a few batteries and I know that batteries add up in price very quickly.

12v 100AH battery is around R2500 easily for one, a single battery being able to provide around 600W of power for 1 hour before it reaches its 50% discharged limit and one hour to drain a battery is quick so the overall battery life will be reduced.

Add more batteries and this changes things a bit but increases the price significantly.

Considering there is no sun during the night and if you need to run lights during the night then you would need to have power available for at least those let's say 8 hours or so. So a minimum of 8 batteries, if you want to run at higher voltages for increased efficiency you can double that to bump it up to 24v and it becomes 16 batteries with the same capacity.

I do not know much about solar, although imagine it would need the power to be stored on batteries and then an inverter required to convert from DC to 220 - 240V AC.

I have no clue about the price of solar panels and what would happen when it is over cast or rainy for a few days. Larger appliances which some may be running such as AC, dehumidifiers or heaters all use a lot more electricity too and are probably best run off the mains power and not solar / battery solution.

On top of the batteries there would be the cost of the installation, inverters and most importantly solar panels.

Curious to get some feedback from someone who knows about the costing of solar panels and such.

Its got build in thermostats and connected to a timer your set

Ahh ok, never used a panel heater before.

I am using one of those fan heaters with an element, working very well! It has a built in thermostat too, comes on occasionally for a few seconds and reaches the temp very quickly due to the small grow area. Just make sure that if your unit has a light, you kill the light on it (cut the cables to the LED).

Get one of those wall panel heaters for when temps are low at lights off. It's cost effective and quite safe for when your not at home.

Other than that I got one if these.....

My cuttings and young seedlings rather like it. I got that from Petworld opposite cape gate for R145. Temps reaches 22 without thermostat and can reach 40 with a thermostat.

How do you easily control the temps with the panel heaters though?

  5. Nice man! Pretty sure I know where those seeds came from 😛 haha

Why run 12 / 12 light cycle from the beginning? From what I have read, the plants require around 4 weeks of veg before they will flip over to flowering anyways, so giving them 12 / 12 light during this period just leads to slower growth, you might as well do 18 / 6 for the first 4 weeks and then flip over to 12 / 12 if you want to flower early and quickly.

I also don't think those few roots classify as root bound. Check the pic below (not mine), next time I'd say put the seed as it's sprouting straight into a larger pot.

After 5 pages of reading QB vs COB I still know nothing more about differences and which ones I should go for 😂

Haha, I think it comes down to personal preference and what you'd like to achieve.

I am personally using quantum boards.

COB's have more light in a focused area, where Quantum Boards tend to have more of a spread and therefore is a bit more uniform. Also due to the design of the Quantum Boards heat isn't as much of an issue - not that heat is generally an issue with LED's to begin with - but it seems as if COB's tend to have active coolings where QB's are fine with passive cooling, the heat is spread over a larger surface area to begin with so naturally it isn't as much of an issue to cool.

I am very happy with my QB's and do not see myself replacing them anytime soon, if I need more lights at some point I will get more QB's without blinking an eyelid.

  7. So started some LST on the plants, I probably should have started a bit sooner with some of them.

The plants are starting to drink more for sure.

Also the CBD Critical Mass is pushing some nicely sized leaves! It's looking impressive for sure! Quite unexpected.

I grew in hydro for my first few years of growing before eventually having a go at organic. I can relate to what the guys are saying above about yield, growth rate and flavour. I've experienced the same, there is a difference, not huge, but there is. I've compared with clones.

There a many variables to consider though so I'd be cautious to say that one is better than the other with 100% certainty. The flavour issue with hydro could be down to something missing in the hydro nute lines that would maybe address that lack of flavour. Or perhaps there's something we're not nailing with hydro. Cannabis is such a complex plant with so many different compounds and terpenes.... It's either that or its that same effect that you get with fruit and veggies where the larger the  fruit is the more its flavour seems to dissipate.

You're currently dong Organic now, so why the change from Hydro to Organic?

  9. How do you check that the soil is dry?

The top will always dry out first and then I find it takes a very long time, especially with smaller plants, for the remainder of the soil to dry out.

    What is "bush soil"?

  10. Day 21

Some good growth has happened this past week on majority of the plants.

I added some auto's into the mix, want to get some STS and do a bit of experimenting and reversing to try get some seeds and see how it turns out.

Daiquari Lime #2 does not have a seed in it yet, I popped 2 and the one has not yet germinated so popped the 3rd and now waiting for that to germinate and then I will pot it.

My Bag seed plant is growing nicely, although is not happy about something so I did a semi flush on Sunday and will monitor it. Either PH issues or too many nutes, I may have started feeding too early. Very very bushy though and I am not sure what to do with her?

The others are all doing well, liking the growth I have been seeing on the CBD Critical Mass, GSC #2 is has not been happy the past two days or so. Will check the roots tonight, perhaps she is root bound.

GDP #2 will need to be re-potted soon too, surprised it survived actually. Very robust strain. Will be a bit behind the others but happy to wait a bit longer for it. I am sure the yields will be worth while.

  11. Hahaha, glad it is not just me who watches over the plants pointlessly for a bit.

It's actually rather therapeutic. I have actually yet to do it stoned, although imagine that would lead to a lot of time passing with me just watching.

  12. Give it a go and let us know, from the reading I did the plant requires around 4 weeks before it will start flowering so during that period you may as well give it more light to let it grow more.

Curious to see how it works out for you.

  13. I too am curious too, seems you can get 2 or 3 ounces - so 50 to 80g, basically the same as an autoflower.

The above is with 18/6 for the first month and then switching to 12 / 12 thereafter. The flowering obviously takes quite a while though still, so you still end up waiting around 3 or 4 months. A month or two saved all adds up though - not just time but effort, space, electricity and nutes.
