but yea @Stefan, reaching 3kg indoors is not on the cards for like 99% of us hahaha
so i get your focus on outdoor
Yeah I was looking at the costs of lighting to grow in 6m2 area which is R7-9k per m2
Then as naive as it is thought how about use the sun but still have the controlled environment you’d get from a tent and that’s where my idea came to mind.
I could fit 24-30 autos in the area and average about 60-100grams per plant it would meet that 2-3kg per harvest.
The autos mainly so that I wouldn’t need to worry about light leaks and have a harvest every 3-4 months.
I also like the idea of the greenhouse as I can use no-till soil beds to increase the fungi:bacteria ratio which will improve my yields and reduce pests and diseases.
As @PsyCLownhas alerted me to costs involved, I can still make the soil beds but will start off just with a simple greenhouse and gradually improve the setup as I go.

@PsyCLown once again thanks for the detailed feedback. It’s really an eye opener as to the real work that it would require.
im still fairly new to all of this and great that you provide insight as to what is required.
I’ll take your advice and start with a simple greenhouse for summer whilst running my tent throughout the year. Once I get a better understanding of what is required and the challenges I may face, I can gradually improve the setup so to have a fully controlled environment.

@PsyCLown thanks so much for your feedback. Yes I plan to seal the greenhouse completely. I may even build a wooden frame one with those corrugated sheets to allow light in. My friend is changing his floor boards(wood still in good condition) and so can use them as wooden frames. with that possible build, I could also insulate it nicely.
but yes I would like to build the cheapest possible setup that produce 2-3kg of quality bud per harvest.
by using the sun to grow the plants, I can save on electricity from lighting (say I opt to use the greenhouse in summer only) I wouldn’t mind bearing the costs for cooling.

@Twix Aphen I was planning on using Quantum boards (400w per m2)
@CreX wow, I never thought that heating would be such a problem. I haven’t planned it through completely, just had an idea of using the sun as my main lighting and in winter months supplement with Quantum boards.
@PsyCLown I would like to make use of the sun whilst having an indoor product, but having to have to purchase lights regardless is making me reconsider to your suggestion by maybe building a Wendy house with sufficient insulation or just make use of the greenhouse during warm months and continue with indoor tents inside my house.
I watched a video where Mandalorian Genetics proved that you can get a uniform auto through proper breeding. a long term goal (dream) would be to breed autoflowers as I’ve seen there’s 0 local autoflower breeders. I know basically nothing of breeding at this point hence my use of the word ‘dream’ haha but starting to read about it and how complicated it can get, but believe with the right amount of effort and determination I would be able to do it.
@Bos yeah I’d like build raised beds and grow in soil.
Wouldn’t an AC be able to deal with the extreme hot day as the greenhouse is relatively small in being approximately 12 cubic meters?
I haven’t considered electric costs at this point I mentioned it’s just an idea I had thinking the sun is better than any light I could get and way cheaper if I’d focus my money on environment rather than lighting and once the setup is running good, introduce lighting as the months start to get colder?
To all: if I were to only run the greenhouse during summer months would that significantly save on costs as I wouldn’t require lighting and heating?
And how cold does it get in winter? Is it possible that I could get away with it with minimal heating as our temps doesn’t get to freezing point. Obviously I understand the product would be significantly poorer quality, but could still be good enough for extracts?
thanks for all your feedback it has really opened my mind up to the challenges I may face should I proceed it with.

@Twix Aphen thanks for your feedback. I am planning on growing autoflowers only which don’t require the 12 hours darkness to flower. Would a tarp still be required?
-
Hi all greenhouse growers
I’m very interested in growing this way but I would like to add supplemental lighting so that I grow autoflowers all year round.
I plan to control the environment fully with heating in winter, cooling in summer, a 40cm fan per 1m squared(6 in total) and dehumidifier as well intake fans recycling fresh airflow.
what I would like to know is whether the buds will turn out more like indoor buds or like outdoor?

Congrats all that won. All were excellent submissions

That looks a great suggestion, I went ahead and replaced with an identical part to its original part was simple and easy to replace.
made sure the power is long and not tugging on the power block and check the connection regularly to prevent that from happening again

Just followed. Great job on the last harvest as well

If you have a address the seedbank ships to, nothing hindering to send further. Just stealth it, customs will confiscate any seeds they find.
You can get your own address in the US, Canada or Europe, warehouse services like planetexpress.com. Friends work best, as they can proper stealth it.
Have you ordered any seeds from Mephisto since you posted this?
I think ima ask my relative in UK to send it to me. Just a question regarding stealth shipping though.how stealth must it be? If it were in a Xbox/PlayStation game cover would that be sufficient? Don't customs have scans that will be able to pick up what’s inside the cover?

Has anyone heard of square 1 genetics. They have the famous strain of banana butter cups which is super resinous.
anyway, after doing a little digging, I found Terpyseeds.com is an approved vendor of them who does deliver worldwide, however, they don’t guarantee shipping.
there’s a seed drop this Friday @4.20pm PST for those who don’t mind taking the risk to get these babies.
im set to miss out on this drop but thought I’d share for those who are interested. Think they will go for $150 for a pack of 10 feminised seeds.

It might have been caused by tension on the cable, causing the terminals to “arc” and build up heat, melting the plastic. Once the plastic looses shape, as it melts, the terminals can move apart to the point where the distance is too far for the power to arc and it just breaks contact.
If you are buying a new IEC (Kettle Plug cable) you can get really long ones, like two meters or more. You can also make one up with components from a radio shop.
Some pro audio equipment makes use of “Powercon” connectors which twist and click so they can’t pull out (just some useless info)
Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkThanks Dookie. Such a great idea, so even if there is tension they look like they lock so preventing it from loosening?
Edit: saw @PsyCLownanswered my question in his comment.
thanks everyone, will really save me a few bucks knowing I can easily fix the light

Hi @Stefan
unfortunately, loadshedding likely had nothing to do with this.
this is the result of what is called a hot joint/connection, and is caused by the cable not fitting correctly or snuggly enough into the plug.
basically, the pin that burnt was juuuuuuuuuust touching its female counterpart, which causes a small amount of resistance. the resistance makes the join or connection hot, and the heat can cause additional resistance, which can lead to this.
you are very lucky man... this is exactly how most home fires start.
i use the computer cables all over my grow and go around and touch them regularly to identify if i have any hot joints so i can sort it out.
with these its ease to resolve, you just bend the pins open a little bit more which makes a tighter fit... in your case though... you will need to replace the connection block on the light, as well as the cable.
check with the manufacturer to see if they can help you out
Thanks for the detailed explanation. What do you look for when testing your cables? That buzzing sound? I remember with my old desktop pc that if not connected properly you get that buzzing sound.
the light is quite old so think it’s time to replace it but I’ll check at a electrical store to see if they can replace it safely without risking any fire.

I’m eager to kick up the brewer again and bubble some barley curry just gotta make sure its hot, not hot hot
but ya I am using biodyne, and a have used a few microbes inoculation products, they say the mycorrhiza is the best ROI in agri feed programs. Biodyne works okay, better outside in the garden than in a amended mix I suspect. But can’t say for certain.
Spicy but just not too spicy
have you tried the Cannabis microbial consortium from Jamie’s Garden? would like to know how it compares to biodyne and other microbial innoculants.

Do you plant seed in to that mix or transplant?
Yeah I plant seeds directly into the light mix after germinated through paper towel method. However, next time I’ll germinate the seeds in jiffy plugs and place them into my pots.
I’ve tried placing rooted clones directly into elemental blend mix and it also struggles so made myself a light mix(used equal parts ‘used’ orgasoilux, buffered coco, worm castings and 10% perlite) and use it for clones and seed germination.
I haven’t attempted transplanting yet as I mainly grow autos, but have a few clones that will need transplanting. Probably will transplant directly into the rich mix with a bit of myco fungi.

I also make use of the elemental blend and try not to overdo the re-amending used soil as you can always add later if too weak. I’ve noticed the Blend is quite strong/hot so easy to stunt plants.
If you decide to make use of it, I’d recommend have the full dose 10-30ml/l of soil with a top layer of the used ff with 30% worm castings only to allow the roots to establish themselves and work there way into the rich blend.
that worked for me perfectly(added coco as well to the top layer but that was indoor pots and not necessary for you) and only fed nutrients once a week.
to add: I’m also looking to amending my own soil as I can add specific amendments should issues arise whereas the elemental blend you adding a bit of everything and the plants may not necessarily need a bit of everything.

I fully understand and my comment was not campaigned at withholding your strains from the world, but more of protection from people using your goodwill to generate income for your hard work, also protection in the sense that your cross name and business can get damaged from poor imitations.
plant variety rights does not prevent sharing but will require permission from the holder to ‘work them further’ as you say. Which I see in the industry by means of referencing the breeders of mother plants.
I’m not sure how often plant variety rights are requested in the industry but given that some breeders give credit to previous breeders shows it is present or at least in sense of morality(give credit where it’s due).
thought this thread was missing a legal POV

I purchased it earlier, and plan to use it as a foliar feed once or twice a week.
is the dosage really 2-4 ml per 10l ? Do you mind sharing your preferred dose?
