  1. Too bad the live stream cut off. The state started the cross examination of the plaintiffs expert witness Prof. Nutt

Cross is often boring, frustrating and repetitive on purpose. They attempt to attack the testimony of the witness from as many angles as possible to spot discrepancies in their rendition of the testimony.

Frustration is a big part of this game because an frustrated person is more liable to make mistakes. So asking the same questions in varying degrees of irreverence or as similarity as possible are the orders of the day.

Basically the state was trying to frustrate him and get him to answer questions in a manner that framed his arguments unfavorably [falsely].

    Such as:

Accusing of him of being irresponsible by leading laymen to believe that Cannabis could be used to cure HIV, when he stated it could be used to treat some of the symptoms and side effects. (Wasting, nausea from other treatments etc.).

    Or:

Asking for his opinion on something, but then when he answers, saying that this is just his opinion on not fact. An attempt to frame some parts of his testimony as opinion rather than fact.

The state further tried to frustrate him by making him answer loaded questions with a limited set of answers that were reductionist and missed the content and spirit of his testimony.

    Essentially oversimplifications and false equivocations.

    Such as:

Asking if he believes there should be more research into the harms of cannabis (with only yes or no as the answer set), implying that it may not be well or fully understood.

[Personal opinion] Allowing the state to argue that until it is fully understood a decision would be irresponsible to make, a delaying tactic.

    Or:

Portraying the idea of legalization of Cannabis as a free-market model, when it has been clearly stated that state control is the best model for legalization.

Interestingly there are essentially four models of Cannabis regulation:

Prohibited, completely illegal except [sometimes] in circumstances such as research. (our current model)

Decriminalized, activities related to Cannabis are seen as civil infractions not criminal ones. Which means fines/community service instead of jail/criminal records (Portugal)

Legalized - State controlled, this is where Cannabis is legalized but regulated by the state. This can range from state only/state licensed production and distribution with sales and possession limits (like ammunition), to distribution only limits, such as only 5gramms per purchase etc.

Legalized - Free Market, this is where Cannabis can be produced, consumed, distributed by anyone in the market with little to no regulation.

As the expert says, and I must agree, State Controlled is probably the best option [a lax state control]. Cannabis does have harms, and abusing it does have negative effects, they are small but they exist.

Policy should be to reduce the amount of harms in a given society while maximizing the benefit.

Prof Nutt and many like him have done tons, and tons, and tons of research on this topic and are highly qualified to make these statements.

It boils down to the fact that State Controlled gives users access to Cannabis should they want/need it without increasing overall usage by significant amounts, thereby minimizing the harms overall.

The experts agree that moving people from an alcohol recreational use population to a Cannabis recreational use population is beneficial overall because the harms [of Cannabis] are so much lower to the individual, society, environment, & economy. But those who are not users of either, and have no medical need, should abstain from both.

I assume the state is trying to make it seem:

That there are unique factors in RSA that are unaccounted because the research is all eurocentric.

Research is incomplete and there may be yet unidentified harms.

That managing a cannabis market is not tenable in RSA.

And as stated, even by Prof. Nutt, there are harms, and it is better to prevent harms than enable them.

South Africa does not have the infrastructure nor overhead control to manage it effectively.

Cannabis is already available for medical research and use. [albeit not easily]

    Personal opinions:

An interesting point is I find people tend to glorify Cannabis as some sort of cure all and only good, or an evil destructive narcotic.

The truth is that it is neither wholly good nor bad, it has benefits and it has harms. I find lots of people to be polarized in their view of Cannabis.

P.S. Even the plaintiffs expert witness stated that driving under the influence of Cannabis is risky. By a factor of 2x the risk [as compared to sober driving], compared to alcohol which is 8x. Just an interesting thought looking at the poll on the homepage. And combining the the two is additive [10x] or even multiplicative [16x].

  2. Out of curiosity, what would this setup cost?

    About R 1000 all included

The sensors are fairly cheap, the pi is about R280.

Only issue is you need to either get a hammer installed header pin set or fire up a soldering iron for the pi zero

You could rather get a RPi3 but they cost R700.

  3. @CerealKilla and @Totemic

You'd need to learn how to use linux as a start.

Then learn how to use terminal in linux

You can start out by buying

    1x "raspberry pi zero w"

    1x headerpin set

    1x case for RPiZw

1x 32GB microSD card to store the operating system

    1x power supply RPi

    2x DS18B20s (waterproof temperature probes)

2-4x DHT22 (humidity and temp sensors)

1x 4ch or 8channel relay depending on how many items you want to turn on or off

You could use the temp probes to get accurate temp readings in the tent or in the DWC (if you have).

You can use the DHT22s to measure relative humidity inside your cab/tent at different locations and externally.

Then you would need an operating system to run the wireless webserver, Home Assistant is the easiest to setup and it has a built in webserver and can control the relays via GPIO.

All in all I can help you guys are in CPT

  4. Hey dude,

I have a few up and running doing this already. Which monitors do you want to use?

I'd recommend using the DHT22s for humidity, just replace them yearly. And then a DS18b20 for temp (much more accurate than the temp sensor in the DHT22), which is waterproof so you can even stick it in a DWC bucket.

I'd run HAssbian and add a relay to control all the other systems.

EDIT: Just realized that I necro'd this...

  5. Thanks @CerealKilla

@narnia thanks for all the assistance haha. I called in and checked, they said it is buffered and they did do a flush before mixing everything else in.

I guess I will try it out and see if it works, at least that way I can give feedback to the forum and we will know if they do it properly.

  6. EM pro soil, Fulvic and humic acid and a little bio grow bud and that's it. Recently changed over to freedom farms soil mix, the organic mix done in house at the hydro shop is not that great, In fact I don't think they cook it properly so very hot.

Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk

Are you referring to the organic promix from hortishop perchance? What do you mean by very hot? And by cook do you mean charge?

  7. "The controller is a raspberry pi zero wireless, it is connected to my home network and will run its own protected web server that I can log in to and see exactly what my parameters are at that time and their history."

Flippen Hell! Baller of note!Wow man, that is definitely an amazing setup to have! Pulling up a chair for this one...

    Haha, thank you.

That is the cheapest part of the system, and the easiest to setup!

@narnia I still need to install the ventilation stuff, I've been a little lazy with that.

And I can also control the drivers with PWM, which I can use the PiZero for,so I could potentially drive the cobs at 1amp instead of 2.1amps

    My nutes arrived today, finally.

    EHG:

    Grow, Micro, and Bloom

    CaMg Nitrate

    Biodyne Environoc 401

I think I am going to go get the promix organic from Hortishop in Cape Town.

    "Promix Organic consists of:

Coco Peat [50%], Perlite [50%], Turbo Grow, Dolomite Lime, Rock Phosphate, Powdered Kelp, Mycoroot, Diatomaceous Earth, Trichoderma & Worm Castings."

    What do you guys think?

Just got a quote for 3x 150mm circular weather louvres for the cab @ R 1000. Which seems a bit crazy, does anyone know where to get some that aren't the cost of our GDP?

  8. The PLC 6 (Greengenes - pacificlights) has sphere data; the chips are, however, B series driven at 1800mA.

Conveniently though, comparing to Vero spec. sheets, efficacy is the same:

    B series @ 1800mA = 160lm/W

    SE D series @ 2100mA = 159lm/W

The sphere data has 1.91umol/J  (with the fixture listed as 1.97umol/J on pacificlights), this I believe is based on 110/120V vs 220/240V vs 277V  - driver losses are less on 240V.

For lack of other data to draw from, I would think you could fudge from 1.91 ~ 1.97 umol/J in some fudgy calculations.

    474W @ 1.91 = 905 umol/s

              @ 1.97 = 933 umol/s

Punch that into your square meter area for ridiculous PPFD that's best illustrated by Lord Helmet

I did some math with those numbers, I was always shit with math so hopefully it checks out:

    Vero29 3500K

    Vf

    = 37.6v

    A

    = 2.1a

    lm/w

    = 159 lm/w

    umol/J

    = 1.94 umol/J

    w/perCOB

    = Vf * A

    = 37.6 * 2.1

    = 78.96w

    PPF

    = umol/J * w/perCOB

    = 1.94 * 78.96

    = 153.18 umol/s

    Area

    = L * W

    = 0.552 * 0.428

    = 0.24 m^2

    PPFD perCOB

    = PPF/area

    = 648.37 μmol/s-m^2

    Total PPFD

    = PPFD * 3

    = 648.37 * 3

    = 1945.11 μmol/s-m^2

  9. You doubled down on the COBs. Noiiiiiice :-clap   were the prior 3 also D series, and a full double, or were they higher voltage series and a bit less than doubling up? All 3500K? And are these all going in the same spec. cab. ? Holy shieet.

Interesting idea with the hydroton as it may help wick moisture from the fabric pots, but it will hold water as well. Also, could this be an area for nasties (pests / fungi / etc.) to grow? I'm using cheap plebeian plastic mat things from Mambos, cut to size - see pic. - works alright, but always interested in other options.

Haha yeah, I will have a total of:

    3X Vero SE 29D @ 4500k

    1x meanwell 1400mA driver

I have tried to figure out the PPF & PPFD but I can't find the QER for the Veros.

As for the hydroton, I have no idea. I wish I could get some more feedback from the pros!

Wow, can't wait to see this setup in action!!! Lots of pics once you get going PLEASE!

I will! Just need to get it going!

  10. Sounds awesome!!!! You forgot the blades and bong for end result :-rastapuff

Truly prepared! I don't think I saw any testing equipment? TDs/EC pen and pH pen, both will be a must for any grow

Haha, I will get a vape for then.

I will get the TDS pen and pH pen soon.

Just wow man. Love to see the phantom in action!

    Should be soon!

    Any new pics?

I will post some soon, I cut the ventilation holes in this week, which was a bitch seeing as it is 18mm ply.

I need to still get my ducting & carbon. The controller is running and seems to be working just fine!

Getting close to starting, will order some ferts at the end of the month.

  11. Thanks.lol....Yes I'm using normal seeds from bags I buy....and it's going well. Is this ideal or not?

I'm probably not the best judge, seeing as I am still planning my first grow. Haha.

That being said bag seeds are just like a lucky packet you can get something awesome

  12. The ultimate purple has been a bit of a let down, didn't get a great shape aswell just hope she goes purp tho ? She is in a fabric pot, I'm thinking they not the best for Coco as I got abit of a lock out think they need regular flushing, Wil stick to airpots from now on for Coco!!!

Don't they essentially do the same thing?
