Hey guys, just a few questions plz.

i still see some signs of deficiencies on my girls, had a mix up with my soil meter giving the wrong reading for a few days now, so completely fucked up the feedings. Flushed them all yesterday and got ph to 6.1. I have also decided to go with coco/perlite/soil mix. Ive noticed the plants that looks the best and gives almost no kak, are in this mix, as suppose to the ones in coco/perlite/vermiculite. Also takes less watering and feedings, saving sum moola

    anyhoo, my questions.

    1. What is optimal room temp?

    2. What is optimal soil temp?

    3. When watering, should i slightly heat water(if so, to what temp) or use room temp water?

    4. PPM, i know what this is, but still don't really understand it fully and how to monitor that it is correct?

im collecting my new ppm meter and ph meter today. Also want to go get that cocomix nutes from hydroshop for R350.

Hi @Oolong83 nice LED mission you got going there :-greenthumb which lights are you all using, I have one 50w LED light I am playing around with.

One thing is certain LED grown plants seem to use less water and most likely less nutrients I would imagine, don't quote me on this though.

I'll link you some resources at the bottom, always best to make up your own opinion about things, but here are my personal recommendations.

    Q&A:

    1. For a indoor setup I would say 18C to 28C would be a nice optimum range for most weed plants, some strains can handle higher and lower temps.

    2. I usually just make sure that my soil does not get too hot, roots can suffer and stress if that happens, hardly a issue in a LED growroom I would imagine. I think if you kept soil around 18C to 22C it should be good, if it goes up to 24C or 25C I don't think it will cause stress, but for a optimum setup I would say not much higher than the latter, especially when gardening in containers.

    3. I just give room temperature water, of course when it is winter I would recommend not feeding water that is much colder than 16C and for a optimum setup you can have water around 18C - 22C.

    4. PPM stands for parts per million. Think about it like this, pure water, RO water, has a very low PPM, lets say 0 - 40 PPM. In the case of 40PPM, that means in there are 40 parts of stuff per million in that water, could be salts, minirals, etc. If the PPM was 0 that would mean there is absolutely no stuff in the water, no minerals etc, just pure H20. This of course is only as accurate as the device you use to measure it with.

So in the case of nutrients, more of it you add (salts) the higher the PPM will go as there is more stuff in the water, more parts per million.

Do a search online how to convert EC to PPM and visa versa, useful to understand.

Hope that helps a bit, here are some resources you can check out.

  3. Just to throw a spanner in the works, there is also Organic Hydroponics, but I have not seen any of the nutes here in SA.

I am a organic soil grower, but I can tell from some experiences abroad that I think it is very much up to the grower, and his or her available nutes + knowledge.

Some of the dopest dope I ever smoked was hydroponically grown, and also some of the dopest dope I ever smoked was good ol soil grown.

I think the flush is what really makes a hydroponic smoke match up to a soil grow, with that said I'm horrible at hydro, will give it another go when we get some organic lines in SA.

Awesome thread OP, stay blazd up 420SA! :-greenthumb

  4. @AcidAlice the bone meal should be providing calcium as well as the gypsum.

With BioBizz I go with Grow + Bloom and use the Fish-Mix only once or twice during vegetative stage to kick things off, microbes love it.

If I want to give BioBizz every feeding, I use half strength of the recommended (according to their chart). If I want to use full strength (according to their chart) then I feed every other watering, and only give plain water in between, perhaps a bit of kelp or AACT diluted in the water.

PLEASE NOTE I don't use FF, this is just for my own mix. I see t FF has "Organic Nutrients" added, perhaps it only needs nice water and not much feeding required. I would seek the advice of a FF Classic grower. :-greenthumb

Sometimes organic soil mixes take a bit of time to get going, if soil mix was semi hot (bone meal need about a month), ph could have been all over the place, aided with a bit of overwatering. I am not saying this is the case with FF soils, but certainly happens with my own mixes if I don't let the bone meal and other ingredients age for about a month.

  5. Just checked the new pictures you posted. Does look a lot like a Calcium or Calcium + Magnesium deficiency, and showing up on the older leaves.

Does the FF soil mention if it contains CalMg, I have never used it so I dont really know the mix.

Is over watering perhaps a issue, damaged roots can also cause temporary issues with nutrient uptake.

If not maybe it is just some CalMg def like you mentioned at the start.

The older leaves will most likely not recover fully so keep an eye on new growth and newer fan leaves.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, let us know how it goes! :-greenthumb

Lol I skeem it will be nice man, some good pedigree.

Looking very pretty, plants look super healthy, nice growing. :-greenthumb

  7. @highchome usually growers would use a complete nutrient solution, ie, part 1, 2, 3 or veg and bloom, etc for hydroponic or semi hydro grows.

Didnt catch the coco/perlite part, yeh that is hydro, the nutes he has there could be good for veg, not sure about flowering.

  8. @Oolong83 you could mix those nutrients together depending on what you want to achiive, higher N levels, etc.

The most important is to keep a ratio, don't mix all of them full strength but in ratio, would be my advice. and also only when needed.

Used on their own is easier not to screw up inmo.

  11. @Oolong83 this depends on what system you are growing, with hydroponics it might not be the best idea.

With soil growing you could do some experiments, but there is a big difference between aerobic and anaerobic microbes, so how you store your runoff water might need some considerations.

Personally I think if you do want to use runoff water give it to your veggies, or perhaps good for some AACT.

  15. @Oolong83 could be that its roots are struggling, perhaps the start of rootrot, try not to overwater would be my advice.

Weed loves going through a wet to dry cycle. Of course not bone dry, most new growers kill plants simply by overwatering.

When the soil is constantly wet it creates a nice environment for anaerobic bacteria, while the aerobic bacteria loves n bit dryer soil.

The trick is to have both sets of bacteria happy through a simple wet dry watering cycle.

Please note I don't mean bone dry, microbes need moisture to live.
