  1. If your water is above 0.4 EC to start with, the given advice is to filter it first. Then proceed to add the nutrients as normal.
  2. Yeah, exactly. It saves you a few steps and cash as well as the plant is saved the transplant stress. Be sure to check the pH and EC run off weekly in rockwool. Here are some useful, quick video guides ... How To Prepare and Pre-soak Rockwool Cubes for Hydroponics—The Right Way! Rockwool Hydroponics Propagation and Transplanting Complete Guide Grow Big Plants in Rockwool with Hydroponics! ATTN: Grodan Growers Jamie has great products and is very knowledgeable. He has all the additives in their own DIY mix that makes 100L - ORGASOILUX Mineral & Nutrient Pack. Mix it with 50-60% Coco coir or Peat moss and 30-45% Compost and Worm castings. I would use peat moss to avoid possible complications with the poor quality of coco coir we get in this country. Coco coir we get here is loaded with potassium (K), sodium (Na). You should be able to find bales of peat moss (280L roughly R700) locally if buying smaller quantities from grow shops won't do.
  3. Not storing the probe correctly reduces the life and performance of pH probes heavily. Always keep your pH electrode moist. Try keeping the electrode in KCL solution. If KCL is not available use pH 4 calibration solution. DO NOT store the electrode in distilled/deionized water or plain water — this will cause ions to leach out of the glass bulb and render your probe useless.
  4. @RampageZA Shackzilla has a great reputation, should be a killer smoke. The velcro should make it easier, the roots will still grow into the fabric. In my experience rockwool is highly recommended for starting seedlings and cuttings in. It is by far the easiest medium with the highest success rate that I have used. If grown in the 10cm cubes you could go right into the 10L bags with them and skip the 5L.
  5. @greenkush The vegetative growth phase starts when the first true leaves are fully matured. This is typical magnesium deficiency. What nutrients have you got available?
  6. @greenkush Maintaining proper pH is always important. pH pens do the exact same job as pH strips or drops, they are precise tho and give you a reading down to 2 decimal places. When it comes to sensitive scientific equipment, price will impact on materials and build quality. Investing in a reputable brand is worth it, as they have great customer support and accurate equipment. Try Hanna, Bluelab, Eutech etc.
  7. FloraFlex are worth it for sure. They make watering easy and even, especially when you have lots of plants. The increased rootzone due to the blackout they provide allows the roots to colonize the upper cube and stops the algae. Great product, respect to GTHydro for stocking them.
  8. Hi RampageZA, Those are awesome strains you have, Herijuana is my personal favorite. Hope you find a Coffee pheno! Going be beautiful flowers from those ladies. Transplanting from 10L to 40L post is fine, the plants will love the extra root space. Be sure that the roots are fully developed, yet not root bound before transplanting. If you can see an abundance of roots just starting to creep along the edge of the pot, but they haven't yet begun to fully circle, you are ready to transplant. If the soil or loose growing media starts to fall apart and there aren't many visible roots, the plant is telling you that it needs a little longer in its current home before being transplanted. Be careful not to overwater new transplants as this will retard root development and keep them out of harsh light for a day or two. Keep in mind that the roots grow into the fabric pots, making it extremely difficult to free the root mass when transplanting. Rockwool plugs and cubes are a great alternative for starting plants in, they are also extremely easy to transplant and reduce transplant shock. Before adding your plants to the Freedom Farms soil mix, test a 1 part soil to 1 part water (preferably distilled) for pH and EC. Stir the sample for 5 seconds, let it sit for 15 minutes. Repeat and then take your reading. You can change the pH and EC by adding inert medium to the mix, additives or by flushing with adjusted water. Good Luck with the Grow!!
  9. Hi Dr Green, I went with a similar train of thought when buying a new pH pen. Even when growing in soil I adjust pH and EC in my nutrient solution. A more expensive model in my experience is definitely worth it. I had a cheaper chinese model. The reading was slow, would always bounce around, the calibration would drift off quickly and I could never be certain. I went with a Bluelab model from amazon, including 2x bottles of storage liquid. Import duties and delivery to my door, it cost me R1500. The SA side is delivered by Aramex. Coming from the USA it cleared customs and arrived in little over a week, on their budget shipping option. If you use them, make sure shipping is done by Amazon in the basket, they have the agreement with Aramex and not third parties. Compared to the chinese model, the Bluelab is faster, accurate, calibrates easily and also has a temperature read out. Had mine for almost a year and would get another one just the same if replacing. Be sure to get pH calibration liquid as you should be calibrating at least once a month, most pen calibrate to using pH 4 and 7. Always keep the probe soaked in storage solution.
  10. Hello All, Thought I'd share my current grow here since I just started this one. The grow is indoors, the setup for veg is: Grow tent - 80cm x 80cm x 180cm Electronic ballast set to 250w with a standard Philips MH bulb in an economy hammertone reflector. Air flow is supplied via an active intake, ducted from outside using an inline fan (150mm) on a Phresh carbon filter. Exhaust is passive and vented directly outdoors, also 150mm ducting. Box fan for oscillation. Currently temps are maintained between 23-27 C° and humidity between 50-65% using a humidifier. Using Nutriplex 3 part, Silicone, Amino Mix and Efficient Microbes. The solution for seedlings I use is pH 5.8 and roughly 380 ppm or 0.6 EC on my pen, I try keep the water around 21C°. These ladies are in Rockwool cubes for now and will finish in slabs, I hand water throughout the entire grow. Heating pad set to 20C° The genetics are 2 x Super Lemon Haze from GreenHouse Seeds, 1 x Lavender from Soma and 1 x Sour Diesel from BlimBurn. Week 3
