The road to homegrown

Time to invest in a heater I guess. :P

I've nailed down some more specifics on the project I want to do. Gonna use an ATtiny85 microprocessor (these things only cost ~R40 and are more powerful than late-80's home computers, such an amazing thing to think about!) for timing because it works out cheaper than building a timer circuit myself. That little thing is then combined with a couple well-positioned solenoids that release latches holding the cover up. Goal is to build the frame and buy the cover material before the end of this month, then get the lights and set up the automation for the cover after pay-day.

Anyone got any recommendations for lights? Was thinking of getting two of these: http://www.glolighting.co.za/light-bulbs-globes/compact-fluorescent?filter_range_wattage=93172

LEDs might be an option... I like their low power-use-per-lumen-produced characteristics, but I'm not too sure how well they'll do outdoors! xD

@Hochy: I googled "Reddisson" and found a bunch of LED stuff, some floodlights and some "christmas strings". You been using those outdoors? I've seen LED floodlights being used, but apparently the brands that aren't ridiculously expensive are also quite shitty, from what I've heard! :P

Evening Danny, I totally agree with you on quality but for the job you need them for not really, only cause it's easier to swallow R95 instead of nearly R300 if your bulb only has a longer shelf life... or similiar spectrum.....:-puffin     no offence meant Danny, cheaper is sometimes better bud......:-peace they are wicked in veg so would help further your aims

Was meaning to comment on these lights but almost forgot.

These are the crowd the bring in those lights. I bought some at China town Century City. Weirdly not all China towns have them but that one did and Kak cheap. Think I paid R50 bucks rack for 75w bulbs.

They'll work for veg but you'll have to try and source something for flower as China town only had the 6500k. Perhaps give the agents a shot. Oh btw they have higher wattages than 75 !!! Yikes

You make the finest, needle-like point there. I thought you were talking about these LED floodlights I saw on Google, I guess they haven't spent a bunch of money on advertising/etc, so they don't like, light up the whole Google search you know what I mean.

Got a question about drying if I can bother you guys for your :

So I've seen a bunch of people online say that when the bud is crispy to the touch (i.e. dry outside), but still slightly bouncy (i.e. 'wet' inside), is when you need to jar it.

The plant I am currently drying is crispy (maybe over-dry) on the very tip of the main cola. However, the smaller buds beneath are still very moist...

Do I wait a while or jar up?

BTW, I'm nearly finished smoking the weird bushy one, lol. Got the top of the first EL plant curing, it's got a hella dank smell. I'm chopping some of it up right now, I can smell the fruity smell it had when it was alive, but subdued slightly. I'm looking forward to this joint!

I took the one I was talking about down the day after I posted. :P It got pretty dry everywhere by the end of that day, so I figured I'd jar it.

Let me answer your question, though. I am currently hanging the buds in my closet. Am trying to get my hands on a cardboard box but they're surprisingly rare in my life. Thinking of just leaving them in this clear plastic tote that I have, it has holes drilled into it on the sides. Maybe I could try that brown paper bag drying/curing method....

BTW: Found mold on my first harvested bud. A real pity, I wanted to smoke it up with a buddy on 16:20 20/4/2018. :( The very top of it had no spots of mold at all so I let it air out in the open for the night and a day. Didn't see any new spots form on it so I smoked it up, jesus the smell was devine. Fruity, you could taste it on the exhale for the love of christ.

I chucked it into the compost pile and sterilised the jar. Hot water, bleach, small drop of dish soap. Rinsed several times because I don't want to smoke bleach, lol.

I should note that I dried the second one for a day and a half longer than the one that molded and decided to leave it to air with the jar open on it's first night off the stem.

I must remember to take some pics for you guys tomorrow. Most of the plants are all sorta maturing now, looking like they wanna be harvested soonish. The one all the way at the end of the bed is really taking her time flowering, but she smells like those fucken green apple "sour sweets", if you know what I mean.

Awesome man, your having fun I see lol.

You gotta let them hang for 5 days at least in my opinion. Once you jar it up the inner moisture will come out, if you find it's too dry after a day or 2 in jars then add a piece of banana, apple, orange peel to the jar for a hour or 2 or until you happy with the moisture again. Gives off a little flavour 2, don't add 2 much though

Here's a thousand photos comrades, enjoy.

If you want some trich porn, open the budshots up in a new tab and zoom in. This camera is pretty high resolution so you can check out the trichomes in their full glory!

The VK is doing well. It's been through a hell of a lot lately. First I topped it. About a week later I transplanted it. Then I was training the plant at night, and I popped one of the other growth tips off by accident. The next morning I was making my bed and I accidentally hit the plant with my blankets, which sent it flying, spilling soil all over my *carpets* and basically just fucking up its root system.  Next night, I made the same fucken training mistake, so I'm now two tops less than originally would have had!!! ARGGH. Somehow this plant is still alive. I also think it might be getting slight nitrogen toxicity... who knows! lol

Oh yeah Justin, remember how I said the granidilla cutting I took died? Well, basically it wilted a shit tonne so I gave up and took the new cuttings, but instead of just throwing it in the compost pile I stuck it in the bed and ignored it. Looks like it's actually going to survive, so you should be getting that cutting soon! :D Just need to be careful to not disturb the roots too much when I dig it out. o_O

  • 4 weeks later...

I just realised it's been over a month since I last frikken updated y'all!

The plants are all in jars at this point. A couple of them have already been smoked up!

My order from Sannie's still hasn't landed, sadly. I emailed him today saying so... hopefully these seeds reach me, I'd be pretty sad if I payed R800 for nothing. xD

My plans for growing over the winter have completely halted. I didn't have enough time to build all the things I wanted to, and we might be getting a new housemate soon (mid June-ish), so I don't want to risk anything til I have established that they're "cool". Might even need to rehome the VK if it isn't done by then...

I did pick up the ATtiny85 microprocessor though! It's great fun, I programmed it to blink out Morse code on an LED the day that I got it. There's something about programming these little chips that just gets my dopamine going.

@Justin: Congrats on getting Mod status. I have two rooted granidilla cuttings for you! I'm gonna transfer them to soil today or tomorrow. (They're currently in a little glass jar with water + rooting hormone.) PM me so we can organise and finally get these things to you! xD
