Week 3 Update / Veg Week 2

Going to be out of town for the weekend so I'll update now or else risk the wrath of the 420SA police 🤪

Well not much has changed environment-wise.

The hydro ladies are still using the same res solution as before but it's still looking good, PH and EC have been stable so I've left it to be. I have been waiting for the true leaves to do a change. I am noticing some lighter-than-normal green on the new growth now so I'll do a res change on Sunday and take the feed up a notch. PH 5.8, EC 0.5.

Ms Organic seems happy as well albeit a little slower than her compadres but she is hanging in there. Been giving her a light feed of TA pro organic with environoc401.

Did try @iGrowDagga's Epsom salt foliar on all the ladies, will check if anything changes

Today I swapped my kak blurple light for  a 120W LED light I got with Samsung diodes so I'll check what that does to the girls. I also acquired a 240W QB from Light It Up that I'm currently using to flower my other tent. Fortunately, the timing will be perfect to flower these girls with that light when I'm done there.

So enough rant...

Opened the tent after 2 days away and I could see I had some work to do. It was apparent that my res solution needed to be changed and upp'ed a level and that Ms Organic needed a bigger pot.

Hungry ladies:

I also noticed some funky growth on some of the leaves. T1 (right) had a an extra blade on one of the 5 finger leaves giving her 6 fingers and T2 (left) had a webbed duckfoot on one of her 3 finger leaves.

T1's extra finger:

T2's webbed duck foot:

Things escalated from there pretty quickly 😂, when I looked again I had topped T2, removed the weird growth and cleaned her up. This is an early topping for me but she looks vigorous enough to pull through quickly.

Transplanted Ms Organic into her final pot:

After a few hours, the girls got their colour back and were looking much happier:

I'm still not too sure how I'm going to approach the training but if I stare at them long enough I'm sure it'll come to me :-blazed

Week 4 Update / Veg Week 3

It's been a week of some seriously explosive growth, each of these ladies have their own personalities. T1 (Alyssa) is explosive, man her growth is insane. T2 (Amy) is short and bushy, although reserved, she's been putting on the weight on those thick stems of hers. T3 (Janis) AKA Ms Organic is elegant and poised growing with perfect structure and spacing, I'm thinking of growing her out naturally with little to no training.

The girls in hydro got a res change in the beginning of the week and they are getting the 3 part feed and a weekly inoc of Environoc401. Their EC is at 1.1 and PH is at 5.9.  They have both been topped and I'm busy training the branches outwards away from the middle.

Ms Organic got a soaking of rainwater mixed with ProOrganic and Environoc and has been responding really well to her new pot.

T1 - Alyssa

Massive fan leaves, this fan leaf was the one I thought had an extra finger, turns out the finger was in fact a duck foot (webbed) when it had grown out. I had a similar leaf  on the other plant:

Week 5 Update / Veg Week 4

It has been quite a busy week and I now wish for those 16 days I missed in the beginning. I've been trying to get as much done by the end of this week to allow the girls to just chill and recover the last week before the flip. I've had a few challenges along the way but luckily I've come out the other side (mostly) unscathed. My goal was to get the training done this week to allow them to grow out during veg week 5 and pushing them that hard I managed to break not just 1 but 4 cola stems where they meet the main stem 😱, this has never happened to me on this scale before. After some intensive surgery (duct tape and support) and some time in the ICU (new QB light) they have all luckily managed to heal and started pushing out new growth (phew). I must admit, they were a lot easier to break that I'm used to. I can't say for sure, but I think the light that I had on them the last 2 weeks made for weaker branch growth, they looked a little more... transparent and watery? Since putting the under the 240W QB at 70% power they have become stronger and growth (and recovery) has been undeniably better and greener and just more natural looking.

While that ordeal was going on, in camp Organic things were a lot more chill. This lady is amazing, I love the way she grows and I love her structure. I wanted to grow her out naturally but I also wanted to keep a copy of her, so in the end I topped her 😇. I think it's for the best anyway, it would be a bit too uneven on the canopy to grow a xmas tree on one side of the tent 😜

A picture is worth a thousand words right? So..:

T1 (Alyssa):

Finished off her training (note the 2 splits), like a dumbass I only noticed the top one when I got home from work that day:

20210624_070957.thumb.jpg.755d9409351f4ec4aacea84a0b458711.jpg

Noticed this weird alternate node branching, almost like an extra thumb 😜:

20210622_215834.thumb.jpg.d2b58689622471b268aea3882cfd29fb.jpg

She filled out and recovered nicely:

View of her structure:

T2 (Amy)

Training session underway (can't see in this pic but 2 stems also split during training):

As she looks now:

Topping complete:

As she looks now (from the top):

20210627_071043.thumb.jpg.41e4ec52666dc999be91f7ee93a083b0.jpg

...and giving her best pose from the side:

20210627_071058.thumb.jpg.4df36d3612337172b44ca3028a95f85c.jpg

Besides the stars of the show, my tent environment also got a bit of an overhaul. I was inspired by @420SA's ventilation setup. It was a why-didn't-I-think-of-that moment when I saw it. I basically treated my 2 tents as... well.. 2 tents whereas 420sa's setup basically linked the 2 tents and treated the ventilation as 1 tent. Inlet in the one and exhaust in the other and link the 2 tents with ducting... GENIUS! With this method I now have a spare Ø100mm fan.

So here is my version:

Inlet in the veg tent, decide to let the air come in through a carbon filter for extra filtering of nasties:

20210626_213016.thumb.jpg.fb6d800c67f44c52b1c02d30fbc4a017.jpg

Exhaust in tent 2:

20210626_220524.thumb.jpg.2ab2edd691a84d3bb510be382ff3c369.jpg

Just as a side note I'd like to comment on the bug barriers that you can get from the grow stores. I firmly believe that these guys have kept out some serious nasties from my grow and if you're letting air come in from the outside, these things are a must. Check this out from 14 weeks of use, I'll be replacing these more often from now on:

20210626_205353.thumb.jpg.bccacf66b22607d956768b61176c66b1.jpg

A shot of the new one compared to the used one:

20210626_205508.thumb.jpg.8e6351a18eb82f319aa2f5058d699f1e.jpg

Sorry for the long winded report.. enjoy your Sunday guys :-peace

Fantastic post ☝️

Johsis that is some serious dust/dirt/bug collected. Definitely clean that out more often, you don't want to choke your fans or limit the airflow too much.

Great training too on the ladies, making me worry I wont get the best trained plant anymore 😆

Week 6 Update / Veg Week 5

I guess this is the last report before we need to flip to 12/12. I tried getting as much vegging and training done as I could and I hope I didn't put them through too much stress. This week consisted mostly of keeping the canopy flat (well, trying to) and mid-week defoliation before heading towards flower, except for the organic lady, I just let her be and her side growth has almost caught up to the topped growth so I'm happy about that. All in all I think I'm okay with going into flower.

Before defoliation:

T1 - Alyssa:

After defoliation and a little more training:

T1 - Alyssa (sadly couldn't save the one stem and it needed to come off 🙁):

I've read about this mutation but I've never experienced it. It looks like what I assume would be a bud site growing in the fan leaf... crazy

This poor girl's had it all, webbed leaves, weird alternate branching now leaf buds 😂

So what's the norm here, chop the leaf or leave it to grow out?

That is a dominant trait that goes all they way back to the Afghani line Northern Lights, that also expresses frequently in the chocolope NL line, and would also express here. Sometimes it's just the leaflet, sometimes it's a bud too

That's really interesting, I'm going to let it be just to see what happens

Week 7 Update / Flower Week 1

All the ladies are doing well and they're busy pushing out their new green shoots so there is not too much to report on. I would like to share something that I've learnt the hard way though. For a week or 2 now these plants have had me scratching my head. They were starting to show signs of deficiencies that I couldn't explain. I changed my res, my PH wasn't the problem, temp wise I've sort of got it under control by having my lights on during the night so I couldn't understand what was happening and it was giving me sleepless nights 🤣. I eventually had a look at my ventilation set up and I realised that my intake was coming in from the top and my exhaust, or link to my other tent, is going out from the bottom. I swapped that around and in a matter of hours the plants started to get their colour back and slowly the deficiencies started diminishing, they're still getting there but a big swing for the better. I was shocked at what a big impact an incorrect air flow could have. Even though there was ventilation, just having it set up wrong caused havoc. Had to share, maybe someone could make use of my lesson learnt..

I also added a submersible heater to my res to keep those low temps at bay in the root zone.

So these are the girls as they are now:

Thanks JS! Yea, it's going to be interesting to see if the stretch will be uniform amongst all 3 girls

if anything towards your lesson.

you must always remember that hot air rises. so trying to expel the hot air from the bottom of your tent is gonna take a lot more effort than expelling it from the top of your tent.

bringing air in from the bottom of the tent makes sense because often, that is where the coolest air is, also, carbon dioxide sinks, but i think thats a much over muchness.

Exactly that, in my very limited knowledge of air flow dynamics I pictured the fresh cool air coming in from the top, sinking to the bottom and getting sucked out straight away without having the time to fill the tent with fresh goodness. Definitely not much of a muchness, the effect on the plants is dramatic. I think if left unchecked a improper ventilated system could prohibit growth and it would read like deficiencies.

Hi  bud looking good .

One slight thing I have noticed in your soil pot is that you never seem so saturate the medium . I may be wrong about this but it always seems like you just watering around the base of the plant . By doing this you are limiting root growth . You need to saturate the entire pot and then let the medium cycle through a wet dry cycle.  As I said I may be wrong and I an just going off the pics shared . If you refine your watering in the soil you will have a largely increased yield as the tlroot ball will be much bigger .

Just my 2 cents

I have a fear of over watering and tend to do the same.. And that I have noticed when potting up. I have now changed my method a bit and would water 2 3rds on top and the other 3rd in the pot plate so the pot soakes it up.. I find that the plant then tend to droop less and for a shorter period.. I am in 5L pots though.. Is this an exceptable waynof doing it? In the weather we are having the last 3 weeks the pots take a few days to go through the wet dry cycle.. I am in Freedom farm Premium Classic.
