Built, Not Bought

Morning Fam.

Just wanted to start a little something to see what you guys are up to with any custom LED lighting units. Be it parts you ordered and pieced together, or parts salvaged from other fixtures and flood lights.

So yeah, feel free to showcase whatever you've completed, are working on, or built and is in use. Also add in any supplementary lighting that you may have used even if it isn't LED.

Don't feel shy to post your rough DIY work, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, lol!

Anyway, it would be nice to see how everyone's making things work with what they have, maybe someone here can improve your setup with nothing extra, just some new ideas!

Hope this takes off, Enjoy!

Edit: Was supposed to post this under the LED sub-forum. Apologies.

Great idea for this thread!

I think I might have over-engineered my frame
Made with 45 mm extrusion which has one flat side for sticking the Samsung F-Series double row 2 footers.

Going for 240W to replace my California Lightworks 250 in a 80x80
Weighs 6KG
I will replace the the corner fasteners with a lighter option to save some weight

I agree, awesome thread topic!

@ChroniclyChronic

That's one sexy frame you put together!

I'm putting a 1mx1m flower room together.

Got 15m of Alu T-strip. 3cmx3cm. Gona build a 80cm x 80cm frame and put 10 beams across.

Here is what I ordered,Screenshot_20200801-101726_Gallery.thumb.jpg.b3f1e113c634cc9069f7a56472e7dab0.jpg

Strips on backorder with 8 weeks waiting! FML

Here's what I'm going for, Screenshot_20200801-102944_Ecosia.thumb.jpg.c5f5dd58af7e8b0f0289c79a86c63937.jpg

Will have potentiometer for dimming aswell.

The cost of things?

Alu - (local) R250

Strips - (Digikey) R2180

Driver - (Digikey) R1680

- Digikey has free delivery with anything over 2k, will see how much import tax is when we get there.

Potentiometer + resistor - (Stepdads garage) Free, although if you gona buy it, it would be fairly cheap.

Thank you sir. Deeply. This is perfect. I will be going DIY when im ready. Gona save these specs.

Might go abit lower scale though.

Shiiib, only a pleasure my dude!

Here's something you might like,

https://ledgardener.com/diy-led-strip-build-designs-samsung-bridgelux/

Someone on the forum was kind enough to provide me with that link, it's really all you'll need when going DIY LED.

On the frame, cause of the 1mx1m space I'm planning a 80cm x 80xm frame so the light can comfortably fit inside and not fuck with my tent.  Beams of the same alu T-strip across. Will have the best coverage possible, cause will have strip on the frame all over. There will be about 4cm gaps between each beam so no need for passive cooling, heat will be virtually non existant.

That's about it!

Thank you, and Jeez, that's one hefty unit... Nice one though, I'm planning a 3 board qb288 240w fixture, hopefully will get it done in the next 3 months.

Love this thread! This is something small for veg. Draw watt should be about 225w so I would think I’m getting around 100w true. But could be completely off so will keep updating as to how it grafts Simple and easy to put together...

Thought I'd share a few pictures of that UFO LED I disassembled.

I replaced the stock fan with a bigger (120mm) PC fan, slapped on a heat sink I found laying around with some thermal paste I had - it's not optimal but it will help with heat dissipation for sure - and propped the fan higher than the heat sink using some wooden skewers since I figured they would insulate well and it's fine since they won't be under any significant forces.

I then cable strapped everything together with the power supply taped on top of the fan for additional cooling. The cable ties haven't started melting, in fact they aren't even damaged, and I don't think they're gonna give out any time soon.

The replacement fan makes the unit run silently and still remains warm to the touch (a bit on the warmer side though).

I also added some connectors to the input of the driver to make it a bit easier to disconnect.

It's a small project, but taking apart this Chinese Blurple back then when I did and having a look at the insides (including how the LEDs are connected to each other) gave me the confidence to want to DIY my next light. Hell, I'm pretty sure I could even design a board at this stage, so if it was easier to make my own boards, I would😂

Anyway, I've always been fascinated by electronics since like primary school and studying a bunch of science modules helped a lot when it came to understanding the technicalities when rigging up a light, so I'm always willing to learn new info. Finally I have something that can make use of the knowledge, now to just get some parts and hardware😁

Very nice guys!

I have built some LED strips and many QB's

I prefer to run active cooling with my QB's now as the temps end up around ambient room temp, so faaar cooler than passive heatsinks.

Also can work out cheaper depending on where you source it all from.

Unfortunately no pics at the moment.

Thanks bro... Which do you prefer? Boards or strips?

I'm all for active cooling with some silent 12V pc fans... It just makes sense... 6w more to bring the temps of the heatsink down by like 10 or 15°C? Any day

Worked out slightly more expensive than commercially available, but the school fees are priceless

My god, well done bro.

That wiring is so pleasing to look at, thank you so much for doing it that way, lol.

I'm sure it will perform well

I'm curious though, what made it cost more?

Thanks man Yep I also dig the wiring, hope the epoxy holds up, but the wire is pretty stiff so should hold the shape well

I over-bought some things I didn’t end up needing, like many T-bolts and nuts and washers, 90 degree brackets, waterproof cable joiners, wrong guage wire, and too much wire. Taking all this out it was definitely cheaper though. And I can use the spares on future projects.
But I am super happy with it, very good spread and very bright. I just need to add a potentiometer for dimming

This is how I built an overpowered light worth $2500+ on the market for only $850. All currency is CAD.

      *BEFORE STARTING*
Watch the 6 part growmau5 series to learn the wiring:

      For the grounding plug:

      Technical:

4x Hlg 185H 700ma in series drivers (i suggest you buy the newer 240H model) $250

      40x 5000K $350

      7x 3000K $25
(You can use less I used way too many)

All are bridgelux Gen 3/ C3 (Make sure theyre all plug in only dont mess around with the solder ones unless you have 100+hours experience in soldering)
The 3000k ones I used were soulder onlys. Lost a couple due to human error

      Total Cost (TC): $575

      Frame:
(Choose a better material for frame, I used wood composite because I was lazy) (I would think aluminum would be the best material but all have their pros and cons)

      Wood composite 2x2ft v

Matching plastic 2x2ft (painting frame) $50?

Thermal tape (sized to the width of the led bars) $20

      TC: $70-100

      Electric:

      100’ length 20guage solid core wire $60

      50 pack 2 wire wagos 221 $25

4x plastic junction boxes 4inch x 4inch x 3inch (make sure it comes with something to plug up the holes and hold the wire)$40

500 assorted pack heatshrink tubing $20 (good to help fit in junction box)

      4x Leviton 515PV 15Amp 125Volt grounding plug $20

25’ 16guage wire (for the grounding plug) $20

TC:$165-Everything is super flexible here just make sure your amps and volt calculations are solid.
-Dedicated extra fans (required): With 2 medium fans running on the light, and another 2 small fans running on the drivers everything is 20C-25C.

      SETTING UP THE DIMMERS

(Very easy if you do it like i did in these pictures)

      All you need is:
•100k potentiometers (maybe an ohm meter if you want to make sure ur dimmers go all the way to 100, most dont they go to like 92 or 97)

•20 guage wire (same as the led strips)

•Plastic junction box (make sure its got rubber wire holders that you cut a hole through with scissors and put the wire/ potentiometer through)

      •211 Wago wire connector

•soldering machine (temperature is dependant on what kind of solder you use) $25

      • silver solder (find a lower temp soldering machine ~360f for silver) $20
(This light is truly 800w if you use the exact parts, if you use more or less drivers and led strips or different brands then the wattage can vary from 600-1000, materials are very flexible just try to make sure volt/amp calculations are correct) (Always be cautious with electricity, build this whole thing without being plugged in to any wall outlet/power source⚠️⚡️)

The Nova 420W – 1000mm produces a large amount of light(47248 Lumens), making this light ideal for larger grow operations where the fixture can be placed further away from the canopy. The light spectrum and intensity produced by this fixture are both suitable for the vegetative and flowering stage (inclusive of Far-Red chips) of growth. IP 44 standard.

These are my DIY QB lights
I can run them full power with no issues. Quite expensive to build, but I like the reliability of passive cooling.

I have a lot of loose seeds from over the few years plus a handful of seeds that I recently purchased off BnB.
I am going to germinate all 15 of them and take the 12 best looking ones [or at least the 12 that survive] and pop them into 20L fabric pots with Gold Label 70/30 Coco/Perlite that I just recently discovered.

The strains going into the gauntlet are:
Zkittlez x Purple Punch - Ripper Seeds x3 Criminal+ - Ripper Seeds x3 Royal Gorilla - Royal Queen Seeds x1 Aurora Indica - Nirvana Seeds x4 Jock Horror - Nirvana Seeds x2 Grand Daddy Purple - Green Smoke Room Seeds x2 Seed drop 2 October 2020
Light cycle flip 17 November 2020
      Harvest dates:
      1x Criminal +: 14 January 2021 1 x Grand Daddy Purple: 14 January 2021 Everything else: 17-18 January 2021
Flowering times will not be a concern as I have a spare tent that will be used just as a drying tent. I also don't plan on cloning anything yet. When I am done with this bunch I want to decide on a regular seed strain, find a mother and really dedicate to that strain for a while, whatever it may be.
So far we got some live ones popping up, the first 12 at least..

I'll update again when I've chosen and potted the Mighty 12.
