Question

need some help, germinating seeds seems to be going horribly wrong. some are completely fine, while other are just not doing much of anything, with the same method. we tried germinating 4 seeds, in cotton, on a plate with cling wrap over, 2 germinated fine, tap root came out, one has died since, put it in soil, and it just never came out of the shell, the other two have been in the cotton for just over a week now, with no growth. really not sure what we are doing wrong =/ tried the same method with bag seed, and not a single hiccup, all of them sprouted. any advice, please guys? considering throwing in the towel with growing. pics attached are of the two in the plate.

Mmmmm, I have seeds that just did not germinate. People have said it's because I didn't crack my seed shell beforehand. Apparently the shell is harder sometimes or the embryo is not fully matured.

Maybe it was a bad batch of beans. I personally germinate in easy grow cubes or small 6 pack with coir

my method: scuff seeds with sandpaper lightly (they have a coating that needs to be removed or broken to allow water to penetrate). then soak in water for 24hours, max 36. Once the shells have cracked & the tap root emerges, remove from water & add to centre of wet paper towel, fold over & cover seeds, keep towel damp. place in a tupperware that does not let light through, close lid & leave a small opening for air to get through. wrap in a dish cloth & put somewhere warm. you want to keep the seeds btw 17-27C, humid & moist. the warmer the faster they germ. once the taproots are about an inch long they're ready to transplant into the medium. should take about 24-36 hrs.

before you write the seeds off as duds, do my method, i germinate about 90% of my seeds, the 10% i dont germ are generally bagseed or similar. bought breedder seeds i'm at about 95% germ rate.

dont write off growing just yet, just research before each step & stick to the rules & you'll get there✌️

I seem to have miss read that statement. Maybe because it was hidden away like fine print in contracts. LoL.

But anyway let me clear my throat quickly..

QUITTERS NEVER WIN & WINNERS NEVER EVER EVER FUCKING QUIT !!!!!

I am still trying to hone in my skills on taking cuttings and rooting them, cause I suck ass. I have a 10 % success rate after some years of trying. So listen to Kgrows and try new methods. But please never quit growing this beautiful plant.

We need the extra oxygen these days, and some lovely bud porn is always a welcome sight

I think the soak is where i fucked up. didnt let them soak til they cracked, didnt know you were supposed to. left them for 24 hours and just took them out, none cracked. and yes, theyre bought seeds from breeders, but its bulk seed bank. thanks man, will definitely try that. going to speak to biltong and budz and find out if we can get store credit for the ones that failed to germ, add a bit of bucks and hopefully get some proper genetics.

So you're going to find every one has their own preferred methods.

I've tried to germinate in paper towel and in rapid rooters, I prefer paper towel.

Firstly I've never scrubbed / sanded my seeds.
I only soak for around 24 hours and have yet to see taproots during that period.
I then put them into some Woolworths paper towels (no bleach) and into a zip lock bag to seal in the moisture.

I then wait for the taproot to be around 1-2cm long (sometimes they're longer), I then use tweezers and stick them into soil with the leaves / shell exposed above the soil.

So far I've only had 1 seed not germinate. I prefer paper towel over rapid rooters as I find it germinates a little quicker, roots take easier and quicker when in soil.
I like that you can see whether a seed has a taproot yet in paper towel too.
I planted a seed into soil once and covered it and it germinated but then was growing sideways and I had to redirect it and risk damaging it.

Cloning goes great when you're clean, fast and vigilant. And use Eazy Plugs, they work fantastic.

Awesome! You'll probably start seeing Some roots poke out in 2-3 days' time, as long as the temps are 21-24, and the plug surface starts to dry out from opening the propagator's vents for a few days, and then remoistening it slightly and closing the vents again for the last few days, and still mist the clones and remove the lid twice a day to make sure mold doesn't take hold. 18/6 or 24/0 light schedules both work fine. Also I let the tray of plugs rest on some perlite within the propagator - I think the roots love it when the poke out and find those air pockets to explore instead of being squished between the tray and the propagator's bottoms.

Also, a cool thing I've learnt is that if you mist the clones with Environoc solution, mold can't take hold! Woohoo! 😄

Bad beans do exist! That's why I always buy at least 5 when ordering 😛

I also like to lightly scuff seeds in a matchbox lined with sandpaper, but it isn't necessary.

The seed squeeze/crush test sucks as you can sometimes accidentally crush potentially epic seed!

I like soaking seed in RO water containing a drop of Environoc and Kelpak, and put it on a heatpad/in an area which runs between 22 and 25°C. Paper towel method works great too, but in both cases I like checking on them after 24 hours, in case the tip of taproot starts poking out. Once it does, transplant immediately. It's really delicate and can stunt a plant if the taproot gets too long and damaged by handling.

Also use solid paper towels that aren't cotton wool or toilet paper, so that the layers are easily separable, and the taproot doesn't start to grow into the paper, which won't happen with proper paper towels 😛

Seeds germinate lovely in Eazy plugs or jiffies, but I've realized it's a waste, as the taproot runs so quickly through it to the bottom that you'll have to plant it a few days later to a bigger container with growing medium.

Once again, some bought seeds can be duds... Or the quite opposite. The other day I soaked some Chemdog X Gorilla Glue seeds, and after 26 hours I checked on them to see a taproot of about 1cm already sticking out of the seed, and after putting them in Eazy Plugs they broke the surface in 2 days! 😮
